Moving a CU

If I’m asked to move a CU and it’s not to currents regs, am I correct in thinking I need to change the CU?
  • I assume it is plastic? If so then it might be wise unless the old one is nearly new. How far are you moving it, is it an inch to two or some distance? Remember the limitations on tails length, and extending all the circuits need to be done properly, you will need a fair-sized box so that future work is not difficult. An EICR before you start would be wise, and it is worth thinking about surge protection, but probably not AFDDs. All circuits when you have finished should meet the 18th Amdt. 1.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that surely means a metal CCU box?

IMO, Plastic CCU boxes and other switchgear do not catch alight on their own. Loose terminal connections do!

    Legh
  • It's an interesting one. If you put in a new CU, it becomes notifiable, but if you stick with the old one, apparently not.

Naturally, the aim is to comply with the current edition of BS 7671 - safety first!

Do you really have to replace it? Well, if it is not notifiable, and it is not in private rented accommodation, there is no legal compulsion to do so.

    How odd!
