Screwdrivers.

How many does an electrician need ?

  • " Then tap the metal things with the end of the screwdriver, and watch the neon flash.  Once it's flashed, the static is discharged, and it's safe to touch things again. "

Well that's a new take on things. I had to prove to myself that these things can actully be dangerous. As I had never experienced a shock or tingle when using them in a dry environment. I used it to check the volts/liveness of a terminal.on a Metal Halide discharge lamp sunk in a garden. while kneeling on a rubbber mat on the grass.

I felt a slight tingle which convinced me that there is a reduction in safety when using this type of tool out in damp environments.

I remember there was an earlier debate on the pros and cons of magic screwdrivers for several weeks, I think the conclusion was something a kin to marmite tasting event .....lol

    Legh

  • I would guess there’s a choice of over fifty types of screwdriver on my van, in fact there is probably way more than fifty.

For a start of I have a set of Wera security bits

it is surprising how many appliances have security bits holding them together; and that’s just for starters.

It is not only the screwdrivers though is it? I am rather addicted to tools and have pretty much the complete lot for almost any job, in fact, I can often go into a really good tool shop and not spend anything, because they have nothing I don't have already. I have sold some of my bigger tools, the Mastiff lathe ...

OK, you win the game, mine is bigger than yours. The screwdriver drawer in my tool chest is pretty empty, but by contrast, the spanner drawer is rammed full: metric for moderns, UNF for post-war, and Whit for pre-war cars.
It is important to remember a good workman cannot do a good job with bad tools, perhaps that is why there is so much bad work around?

I recall reading advice many years ago that an apprentice needs to be provided with the best quality tools for fear of learning bodgery. I still have one or two that I bought for bike fettling as a teenager.
  • Perhaps tool addiction is a disease. I wouldn't start on spanners, sockets, pneumatic stuff, hydraulic rams and pullers, Chain wrenches, Stilsons, pipe benders and formers.........

Oh and the best tools for electrics, the chasing machine, and vacuum cleaner! I have suggested this before!

How many screwdrivers does an electrician need? How long is a piece of string? It all depends upon what sort of work he is engaged in. A limited number if just house bashing. More if involved in machine installation and maintenance. Even more if involved in industrial work as well. Personally I have about 8, my most used is a CK amber coloured neon tester screwdriver. I do a lot of domestic work and it is great for terminals of sockets and fused connection units etc. I use a smaller Stanley screwdriver for light switch terminals.

You need as many as you need.

  • So long as you don`t use it as a mains tester Zoom - Removing the Neon and resistor would increase its safety
  • I don't find these dangerous at all and have never heard of anyone getting any kind of belt. You cannot via a 470k resistor, but then it could go short circuit if the world ended! Otherwise not a problem. It is about as likely as the PVC cable you are holding suddenly becoming conductive. I really don't know where this comes from, certainly, CK in Germany still supply them in sets. Probably a case of the 500W kettle saving energy. WE have now left!
  • As do Wiha. I have a similar divice supplied DNO operatives, got left behind. It's not a screwdriver and has no identifying marks.
  • Yes, we have left the EU.

So this time next year all neon screwdrivers being sold in this country will need the UKCA mark on them.

I do use it as designed. It has, on the odd occasion, warned me of a live terminal. It is German made and very reliable and excellent quality.
