Contactor to DOL starter & switches
Former Community Member
I have a DOL starter (https://docs.rs-online.com/c08c/0900766b81586106.pdf for reference) that I want to connect to my ac motor. I understand that the dol starter has a built-in contactor. I want to connect two other switches, a tilt and a proximity switch. Is it possible to connect these two switches to this DOL? If not how would I go about this?
More info needed I'm afraid. What do you want these extra switches to do when what is proximal or tilted ?
Turn it on ? trigger E-stop ? flash a warning light ? Look good ?
What is the AC motor doing ?
The start and stop buttons will operate what is in effect a self-latching relay that doubles as UV lock-off. In most desiigns adding more start or stop buttons is possible with a bit of cunning. data-sheet for the thing has the internal circuts on page 2.
My aim with the two additions switches is that, if either the proximity or tilt detects an object close by or detects a tilt, then it would turn off the motor. That's my idea. I'm not sure if it is possible, but I thought I would ask. This is a small project I'm undertaking so the motor isn't really doing anything useful.
If you look at the datasheet link I posted above, the circuit shows the stop buttons need to break to release the contactor - so you add another switch in series with the stop button that also breaks contact in the 'fault' condition. Then when either of them opens the loop, the contactor loses its supply and stops the motor.
You may need to use a relay to invert the sense of the tilt switch it it makes contact when in the fault state you wish to detect.
