CE, UKCA and CE&UKNI Marking From 1 January 2021

In my years of lift inspections statutory and none statutory it was a defect if there was no overhaul CE mark in the lift car followed by the conformity assessment number (Still valid  pre  Jan 2021 ) but does  CE mark  on lifts and other equipment now need a  UKCA mark if installed in UK?.

UKNI markings for NI  well we know that NI has been forced to have one leg in the EU and one leg in GB ,now that is the laughing stock of Europe as NI has  become a vassal state of the EU.

( IET don't forget to update conformity assessment marking in the next  BS7671 people will be watching even a pencil and my glasses has a ce mark )

  • A guy I know was importing from China, one of his suppliers said “just send a copy of a certificate similar to the one you want “.

You can’t fault people with a “can do attitude”.
  • So let see if I'm reading this right...

The UKCA marking is no good for those parts of the UK that are outside of GB (i.e. NI) (why didn't they call it GBCA?)

Goods manufactured and assessed in NI must be marked with one of: UKCA if they're destined for the GB market, CE+UKNI if they're for the NI market and CE alone (without any trace of a UKNI mark) if they're destined the EU proper. So no chance of making and boxing one standard item and letting distribution ship it to wherever there are customers.

So you don't remember the t.v. series Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister then ebee?

  • Let us keep it simple - all the CE mark ever stood for was 'Chinese Export' and nothing else. The eu it keeps a growing army of unproductive and otherwise unemployable people on high salaries doing non-jobs and generally being pains in the neck to everyone else. All we need to do is revert back to the good old BSI kite mark and have done with it. There are many offshore paper companies out there who will do anyone a pad of CE tickets for around £1500 cash in hand, along with covid vax certs and anything else you might need to beat the paper pushers at their own games.
  • Can we go back to 240 volts ?

Northern Ireland would have to use 235 volts of course.

Looking at my Motorola (genuine) charger, that has  CE, GS and TUV.  There is no UL mark, perhaps because it has a 13 amp style plug.

But is there any reason why not the full collection as I have seen so many time previously?

  • I imagine if there is any enforcement of UKCA marks, then that is what will happen, every thing will be overprinted with the new logo in addition to the existing alphabet soup of labels. No engineering changes will be made internally.

If however as I suspect, the enforcement is quite weak, as it currently is for CE marking here, then I imagine the whole marking standards thing will largely be ignored, and unmarked stuff, or things with stick on labels that mean very little,  will abound with not technical supervision at all.

I notice that Lift Regulations are included in the list, so I would expect** that if you look at the actual regulations, you will find UKCA has replaced any mention of CE, along with relevant dates etc.

** I haven't checked, but this is the general pattern for the others which I do work with (LVD, EMC, ATEX)
  • Bank holiday Monday,  I took the blades off my mower, sharpened and refitted them and cut the lawn.

I had a quick look at the labels on it, this one on the engine did not t come as a surprise, we know other countries have higher standards than the UK and Europe. Indeed not all states in America have the same standards, I believe the standards in California are way ìn front of the rest of the USA and the world.

The question we should probably be asking is if the UK is going to have higher standards than most other countries,  because if we are then exporting should not be much of an issue.  If however UK standards fall then export opportunities will fall as well.
