  • Here is a video of it going orribly wrong.
    youtube, substation fire.
  • Thankyou I enjoyed those  its amazing whats on YouTube isn't it I've definitely learnt a bit x
  • Looking at that transformer fire, if you are interested in the kit,  Buchholz trips, that short the incoming HV when the oil pressure rises, thus blowing expulsion fuses and  removing the incoming supply (or nowadays operating some sort of contactor is preferred), are designed to avoid that chip fat fire explosion sort of thing, and have been a standard thing on large oil filled kit in the UK since just before the war, being developed and patented in Germany by a Mr Max Buchholz in 1921.

  • I've heard of bucholz relays but ide no idea they had been around so long I think that in the UK we seem to have much better safety controls on our HV network than the US does at least thats the impression I get. With regards to that video I bet whoever owns that grassy area was a bit ticked off when it got partially toasted. Roast worm anyone?
  • This gets dragged up regularly on here. It is Ives Dairy substation in Florida. If I remember rightly, fuses were left out after maintenance preventing the incoming supply from being tripped.

  • more on the Ives Dairy incident
  • Thanks again all I watched the grid documentary whilst I was nibbling my breakfast very informative although some of the contributors had some strange things to say   most notably the bloke who I think they said was a writer of some sort. Overall tho very good especially the bits about battersea powerstation when I was a kid my aunt and uncle lived in a flat in battersea and you could see the station from the balcony. I remember the chimneys smoking away in the distance
