Twin core swa cable

I am putting a summerhouse in the garden.  There is an existing cable running from the house to the location of the new summerhouse.

It's not connected yet.

The cable is twin core 25mm SWA.

Am I OK to use this for connection to the house electrics?

Is the armour layer used for the earth?

Thanks for any advice

Dave

  • Well you need to consider a few things.

Current rating and volt drop for a start.

also if you are using the armour as an earth (most likely) then what size is it (cross sectional area) and most importantly its equivalent resistance to copper, therefore is it ok as an earth and if needed for bonding too.

So a bit more info needed about proposed use
  • You also need to know whether the earthing is PME, TNS or TT.

    Regards,

    Alan.
  • You also need to know how to properly terminate the cable at each end to ensure the armour can be reliably used as a protective conductor.
  • That's a hefty cable just for a summerhouse.
  • 25mm????

    Don't forget the banjo!

External terminations, unless terminated within the building.

Yep but if it`s already there then why not use it rather than pay for something else.

We need all the info above and extra because we can`t just give a yes or no with the info given yet

  • Are you sure its not 2.5mm2?  That would be more likely!

    I have got external terminations.

    The diameter is 23mm

The cable is marked crompton 600/1000v

Its been in the ground for about 30 years and never connected.

That's old school Tom! - these days I prefer an earthing nut - much tidier and easier and far better with plastic enclosures.
