Trunking in a loft for cabling, to be off the floor

I am going to be threading through some new cabling for CAT6 wiring from the loft, it's a bit of a strange setup as the back of the house is two story and the front is three as the old attic rooms/servants quarters (who knows) so in essence it is a straight line through the loft back to the rack.

However since we use the loft for some storage and access I didn't want to lay the cable on the floor but suspend it in some cable trays from the roof beams, they are whatever the standard roof pitch is - I was told to use suspension kits, but this involves lots of wires hanging.  I wonder if anyone has had similar, or a better solution they can suggest?

I have tried to find some form of L bracket that I could use for the cable tray but seems no-one makes them to attach to a wall or beam.
  • If you really want to do this then the smallest size you can get of cable basket (a u shape made of coarse wire mesh) is the way to go. There are various brackets and clips available to go with it, but you will probably need one of the larger wholesalers to get it off the shelf. It is inexpensive.

You beat me to it David! And apart from aesthetics there is no reason why it can't hang at the pitch angle as you're unlikely to fill it to the extent the cabling falls out. It could even be nailed on with fencing staples! It did caution aesthetics so I don't want you to think I'd be that "rough"!

The smallest CEF had was 75mm they didn't have the 50mm, but he didn't have a clue how to hang it - I rang Legrand who's stuff it is and they suggested that I use a hanging clip and then use the suspension method with it - yes it can be expensive once you add all these bits to it.  He quoted £6 for 3m of the 75mm which I am happy with as I only will need two or max three pieces.

It wasn't the basket one I was looking at it was the light version https://www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/4689327-50mm-light-duty-cable-tray-3m-length

or are you suggesting this is better - https://www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/4688957-50mm-x-54mm-fasclic-basket-tray-3m-length

I think you may be right - https://www.rexel.co.uk/uki/c/Cablofil-CM50GS-Electrolytically-Galvanized-Steel-Universal-Bracket-75-x-50mm/p/2500212910  I could screw to a small 2x2 piece of wood and attach that to the rafter without having issue...
  • I have used the simple kind of builder's band in this case with basket, I do not think anyone makes odd-leg hangers for basket on sloping roofs.

just cut it with tin snips and bend the last hole over the hole before so the ragged end is not expposed, and fix with woodscrews to the timber.can be doubled over the wire basket or formed into Pclip profile and bolted.

That makes sense, I have ordered the basket version from Rexel should arrive Monday.  I will get somer of the band you recommended also, hopefully it should work out.
