Correct abbreviations for electrical units.

One thousand watts is it 1Kw or is it 1KW both are used.

Is a "board of trade unit" 1Kwh or is it one 1KWH.

Likewise 1Mw or 1 MW

And 1Mwh or 1MWH.

And spelling.

Power inverter or power invertor or is either correct.
  • Do not worry, on Russian equipment, it is BOLTS, much easier to remember as they have no small letters - and seem to be always shouting....

    Time to CTOπ  I think.

So B+ is the positive supply as, oddly it is in older American texts as well,  because of the old valve era A battery (filamemt) B battery (HT, main power) C battery (grid bias) thing.

Pi in the sky! Yes, let's СТОП!

Correctly, there is usually a space separating the value from the units, so:

    1.5 kV

    400 V

    1 MΩ

    As Bod told me!

  • AJJewsbury:

In some circles K is used to mean "binary" kilo - i.e. 1024 (2^8) times rather than 1000 times - so tends to be used for quantities that naturally increase by a factor of 2 - usually computer memory.

       -  Andy.

    1024 = 2^10     2^8 =256

  • 1024 = 2^10 2^8 =256

Quite right ... I wondered who would spot that deliberate mistake first ?

Why do we speak of AC Voltages instead of just AV (Alternating Voltages) ?

Cos we think of the two popular current types, direct and alternating: D.C. and A.C. As the current is driven by the "Voltage,"  we consider the driving D.C. or A.C. Voltage involved. Years ago the "Voltage" was referred to as electrical "pressure".

    Z.

  • Well we speak of AC Voltages so perhaps we could speak of AV Currents too ?
