'Grounding' Sheet plugs

I came across these things the other day:

This is used for a ‘Grounding’ sheet with conductive fibres woven into it that you connect to the earth of a local 13A outlet.  Leaving aside the ‘science’ of any claimed health benefits of sleeping on a 'grounded' sheet, I wonder two things:

1: How compliant to BS1363 such a plug could be, as technically I expect it lacks many of the features required of a 13A plugtop? The best you might hope for would be that the pins (including the plastic ones) are of the correct size so the contacts in the sockets don't get deformed.

2: In a PME installation, with the risk of a broken PEN conductor externally, I'm not sure I fancy sleeping on a sheet that could potentially become live - albeit that if I haven't got a foot or hand out of bed, and everything else connected to earth at the time should theoretically be at the same potential…..

Would you sleep on one of these?

Jason.

  • These seem, on the surface, to be similar to the ‘anti-static mats’ which have been a common precaution in the electronics world for decades.

Hopefully the connection to earth incorporates a high value resistance (1meg or more) so that, should the ‘earth’ connection rise above true earth, the current flowing through a person in contact with the mat is very small. I certainly hope that the connection between the earth pin & the mat is not direct!
