Schndr Light Switches.

I am going to recommend  a certain make of light switches to all D.I.Yers. The make starts with an “S”.

They are just great for causing confusion, especially the two way type as the terminals are not traditionally positioned with the common at the point of a triangle and the L1 and L2 together opposite. Also the loop terminal confuses 'em luvverly. I got a load of work today when the householder had wired up some “S” light switches wrongly. GGGGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat as that tiger used to say in the breakfast cereal commercial.

Im sure there is a Reg in the EAWR 1989 about provision of adequate lighting! so working with a dim light and "Blind" isnt in the sentiment of the Regs is it!

When I am working in the dim light of a room and the head torch is slipping down my sweaty forehead as it is bashed on the wall, or my small pocket troch is getting covered in spit as I hold it in my mouth I will seriously recall those wise words GTB.

I must have a word with the boss. Oh ek! That's me.

  • It`s the convention that is a worry. As said a Com at one end and the numbers 1 and two at the other end is almost universal. A loop for L (and even a loop for N if you want ) is not a bad idea but the spacing needs more thought in my opinion.

I came across something a few years back - if memory serves it might have been a ceiling rose, but I could be wrong - anyway the LEN config was LNE or NLE if I remember correctly. Although I noticed it as I always read the terminations (I always read plugtop fuses not just the colour) apparently a few had been fooled by this, including a few “Electricians”

  • There’s work available for a versatile electrician in Norfolk installing security lighting and alarms as well as rewiring tractors, but not one who thinks these light switches aren’t straightforward ?

  • Nice one Sparkingchip ?

  • A SUV car belonging to one of my neighbours was nearly scrapped a few years ago after someone cut the wiring harness to nick the catalytic converter off it whilst it was parked on his drive at home. Like the tractors replacing the wiring harness was a significant part of the cost of the repair.

It may take a little time and patience to wire a light switch, but there's far more difficult challenges around your home and in vehicles.

Am I the only one who knows how to use the ‘beep’ continuity range on the meter when faced with any kind of switch with non-standard markings or for some reason unreadable  such as reading round a corner?

    Sometimes it seems so..

Mines the meter with trick test leads ending in the wago-style lever connectors wrapped around it.

The so called electricians with whom I worked had such meters and could use them for very simple tasks. Such as testing a fuse.

However if presented with an unfamiliar type of switch with missing or unclear markings, they lacked the knowledge to use such a tester to determine which terminal served what purpose.

I sometimes felt as though I was the only employee in the area with fault finding skills, and was often sent for to locate what seemed to me to be basic faults.

Did you read the thread from the start Sparkingchip? The confusion was caused by a D.I.Yer trying to install these new switches at his own home. I was called in to correct the wrong connections, which I did, after he made a complete mess of things. Also he had a double pole cord switch with neon light for a loft fan which he tried to replace but shorted wires out and blew the 3Amp fuse in the fused connection unit. (A good reason to fuse down for fans demonstrated there I think). I shall recommend these switches to all D.I.Yers to generate new work for me.

P.S. Does tractor wiring fall under B.S. 7671?

Oh, and when I werra lad and did some tractor driving, it were proppa tractor driving. We ad to steer biet eye, not using some expensive G.P.S. gadget that is attractive to thieves. These modern gadgets are troublesome I reckon. It taint reet.

  • It sounds like an inside job. Or the thieves were watching the tractor in the early hours at work, then assumed that the drivers would be asleep when they struck, after a hard day's work.

Where were the farm dogs or geese?

I thought the GPS systems on tractors weren't particularly used for controlling the position of the tractor - but rather to know the position of the tractor - which is then used when measuring crop yield or dispensing fertiliser or pesticides. So say you had one corner of a field that had a low yield last year, the system could add extra fertiliser to just that area this year to compensate without the risk of over-fertilising the rest of the field.

  • They probably do all of the above as well as sending a text to farmer's wife when it's time to put the kettle on. ?
