Locking switch for workshop

I have two small machines running from a dedicated 16a radial circuit both on switched fused spurs 

I want to add some safety so the machines cannot be operated, I was thinking of adding a locking switch in the circuit  

Would this switch (see link) fitted before both the machines be adequate?

  • I fitted twenty one of the socket version in halls and on landings in seven blocks of flats for the cleaners to use, every one of them uses the same key, so I had forty two identical keys to give to the housing association manage, she actually ended up getting forty ?

    So they aren’t super secure, but if every one of them did have a different key it would be a nightmare managing the keys.

  • 20Amp X means that it can be used with inductive loads, so should be o.k. for small domestic machines.

  • As you are not going to switch any load, a much smaller key switch would be fine. It is the switching that does the damage not a few amps of load.

  • Further to that most damage to switch contacts is done during switch-off when the full load current is funnelled into an ever thinner ever hotter region of metal and hot gasses, until the arc is eventually stretched to breaking point.

    If you cannot limit the current, limit the time - this is why switching mains frequency AC which tends to go out at the next zero crossing, is less stressful for contactors and so on than DC, and switches for high power go to great trouble to quench the arc.
