section 714 outdoor lighting -two IP specs understanding

Hello folks - good evening

≥ IP 2X stated in 714.411.2.201 (basic protection) when access door open

≥ IP 33 stated in 714.512.2.105 (external influences) for electrical equipment

Is it to be read as the 33 for when gear is not enclosed and behind access door eg. inside lighting column , where it can be 2X … or ?

Thank you

  • That is a sensible interpretation. At least until someone  removes the covers and fails to replace them and it starts to rain !!

This is much the same as the query a few days ago about pollution (well conductive dust) levels in an industrial setting - if the door on the cabinet keeps it out then inside the box is not really part of the hazardous environment.
