section 714 outdoor lighting -two IP specs understanding

Hello folks - good evening

≥ IP 2X stated in 714.411.2.201 (basic protection) when access door open

≥ IP 33 stated in 714.512.2.105 (external influences) for electrical equipment

Is it to be read as the 33 for when gear is not enclosed and behind access door eg. inside lighting column , where it can be 2X … or ?

Thank you

Habs

I suspect that there are curious extra regulations for the boys who run around in their maintenance lighting waggons…

    However,

I read it as 2X when the door is open and 33 generally when the door is closed.

  • That is a sensible interpretation. At least until someone  removes the covers and fails to replace them and it starts to rain !!

This is much the same as the query a few days ago about pollution (well conductive dust) levels in an industrial setting - if the door on the cabinet keeps it out then inside the box is not really part of the hazardous environment.

Should it have just been stated as IP33 then (no mention of 2X), or is there some subtle reason for it I have missed ?

As mentioned, I read it as IP33  for equipment not contained, but for that inside the ‘enclosure’ behind the door (whether open or not) IP2X …  but it is odd …

  • The two clauses are looking at different things. Generally, the enclosure should be at least IP33, which protects against rain and objects > 2.5 mm.

However, basic protection of IP2X safeguards workers from shock, perhaps when re-lamping. So no naked busbars in there please.

    that seems fair enough.

taking street lighting columns (im not really familiar with the gear inside the base), is that connection equipment required to be ≥ IP33 and above, or can it be  standard 2X  gear only if the base is IP33, or can it be 2X regardless … are lamp posts IP33  as an aside   ?
