EIC inspection question

Hi All,

When filling out a schedule of inspections I always get stuck on this consumer unit question:

‘Suitability of enclosure(s) for IP and fire ratings’

If there is a metal enclosure, then I don't have an issue. Its only when Ive installed a new circuit to an older plastic consumer unit…..

  • An EIC only covers they work you've done - not the existing. As you've not installed the plastic CU, it's material isn't of concern to your certificate (provided it doesn't undermine the safety of your addition/alteration).

If you want to comment on an existing plastic CU, the ‘Comments on exiting installation’ box might be more appropriate.

Thanks Andy, my only concern was because I have connected to the CU, if that made it then part of my installation. I have allways put it as N/A but its the one that stops me every time I fill in the form!

My comments in this case are normally ‘Existing installation appears in good condition however does not meet current standards’.

The other one that makes me think is on an OLEV grant form I have to tick the box that says:

'I confirm that the existing installation is in accordance with the current edition of the Building Regulations Part P (Electrical Safety – Dwellings) and in full compliance with the requirements of the current edition of the UK wiring regulations (BS7671) and the IET'

  • “current edition of the UK wiring regulations (BS7671) and the IET'”  Sloppy wording?
