Refusing Upgrade.

I visited a customer that has a holiday chalet and has owned it for about 13 years.  The electric shower had previously been connected prior to the meter. A smart meter installer noticed this and disconnected the shower circuit. I have not heard if any legal action will be taken against the chalet owner. I reconnedted the shower circuit today, it is 30mA protected in a “garage unit.”

The main consumer unit is an old Crabtree C50 type with a separate upstream Crabtree L60 500mA current operated earth leakage circuit breaker which still works fine. The earthing arrangement is TT.

The owner did not allow me to renew the E.L.C.B. with a 30mA R.C.D.

A short sighted view I feel. After renewing the tails and installing Henley blocks will I be liable for any future problems?

  • You're an electrician not the Gestapo. You can only offer your advice and it's up to the customer to accept it or not.I  suppose if you're bothered you could put your recommendation in writing.

  • Well, the shower unit is a lot safer than before. Nothing else has changed except the advice to upgrade written in the invoice to the client.

    Legh

    lol… beaten to it

“Gestapo” is that a new band? They sound punkish. I did put my concerns in writing on my invoice G.

    In my mind's eye.

  • Otherwise you end up writing an essay on the certificate explaining the issues with the emphasis being on your recommendations for improvement being highly recommended.

You are the trained, qualified and experienced professional, not the customer, so generally you are the person who knows what needs to be done, not them.

Customers like this can be more trouble than they are worth.

Liable for negligence? No. Your duty of care is to ensure that the work that you do is to an acceptable standard. Liable in contract? No, you have satisfied your contractual commitments. Criminally liable? Not at all. Stop worrying!

    I must stop worrying.

    I must stop worrying.

    I will stop worrying.

    I will stop worrying.

But I worry that I can't stop worrying.

  • What I do find very annoying these days is when a subject is mentioned, perhaps a safety issue or non-compliance we get  replies such as,

My mate done that, he is an electrician.

It's been all right since we moved in in 1973.

    It's always worked o.k. before.

Do we really have to have it done?

Well the more people that do this type of work and roll over for their tummy to be tickled, the more this sort of work gets perpetuated…………………………………
