Under Voltage release / relay for the final distribution board

Do under voltage release / relays are required for the final distribution board installed at the absolute bottom of the power stream? Any disadvantages by not providing it?

  • Why is an under voltage trip required ? Not usual IME.

It is usual to provide an under voltage release for individual motors or machines when unexpected re-starting would be dangerous or damaging, but not usual to provide this for a feeder or distribution circuit at utilisation voltages.

  • Are you certain that what is called for is 'under-volt release" as in 'automatically open the breaker when the supply voltage drops below a threshold' or is this calling for, say, having an earth leakage detection module that opens the breaker by dropping the supply to UV module thus ensuring that the breaker trips on failure of the integrity of the link between detection module & the trip element?
