Is Isolator between main supply and main MCCB of panel board overkill?

Is an isolator between main supply and incomer MCCB of a panel board really needed? Won't the incomer MCCB act as a isolator anyway?

Just wanted to know what other people think?

  • So what do you do when you need to isolate the supply to safely work on the board?  Calling out the DNO to pull the fuse is a lot more hassle than switching off an isolator.

  • I agree - an "extra" isolator is becoming more common these days - even on stuff 'before the meter' - e.g. in blocks of flats where the DNO supply feeds a BNO system which then feeds meters for individual flats. It just makes life easier when there's maintenance/replacement work to be done - especially since everything got split up into separate DNOs, BNOs, electricity suppliers and each needing to charge for any extra work, it's lot easier if one individual can just get on and do their bit in isolation as it were.
