Prosumer Insurance

While sat through the CEF panto at Chelmsford yesterday, alot of talk a turning homeowners into generators with battery backup,  one thought came forth, and in the light of the recent potters bar bus fire, how will this affect my buildings and contents cover, currently a whopping £400 pa, could we be adding another zero to that in the panic to net zero in eight years time.

  • So far, no insurer has ever asked me, and it's not mentioned in any of the policy documents.

But one of the biggest cause of house fires is electrical appliances, particularly dishwashers.  And nobody has ever asked if I have a dishwasher.

  • You posh folk with dishwashers

  • What on Earth says diswashers, it is tumble dryers!

  • It looks like I was wrong.  It's cooking appliances first, then tumble dryers. https://www.electricaldirect.co.uk/blog/which-appliances-cause-the-most-fires-at-home

  • The  chart is a general synopsis of fires, not causes. Plus no mention of the solar panel fires.

Interestingly battery chargers caused 60 fires.

Probably just car chargers rather than battery storage.

  • Laptop chargers and phone chargers are a large part of the 'chargers' figure. They tend to get left plugged in without a load and still switched on, and there are some pretty poor 'knock-off' designs that are veritable death traps.  example1  example 2 But even for a good one, being covered by piles of clothes or news paper or whatever can be a compounding factor.
