Prosumer Insurance

While sat through the CEF panto at Chelmsford yesterday, alot of talk a turning homeowners into generators with battery backup, one thought came forth, and in the light of the recent potters bar bus fire, how will this affect my buildings and contents cover, currently a whopping £400 pa, could we be adding another zero to that in the panic to net zero in eight years time.

So far, no insurer has ever asked me, and it's not mentioned in any of the policy documents.

But one of the biggest cause of house fires is electrical appliances, particularly dishwashers. And nobody has ever asked if I have a dishwasher.

Here's some info, just mentions the roof top panels,.

The CEF tech talk yesterday advised to fit battery storage in the garage, not in the loft space or outdoors because the temperature variations would upset the battery chemistry. Well my bedroom is above my garage.

Agreed, they`d try sell you a dishwasher, I`ve always considered them un-needed, too much hassle when you ask folk how they use `em. Talking purely domestic 2.4 children sort of range, a busy catering place might well be a completely different ball of wax

The chart is a general synopsis of fires, not causes. Plus no mention of the solar panel fires.

Interestingly battery chargers caused 60 fires.

Probably just car chargers rather than battery storage.

So it can be hit by a car?

Wherever the storage battery is placed, there are considerations of:

fire/explosion risk (and if the area is in a location part of or attached to dwelling, and not regularly visited, the installation of interlinked fire detection and alarm recommended by BS 5839-6)

Temperature

Mechanical impact/damage

Suitability for weight and mounting of products

Accessibility for maintenance, repair and decommissioning (weight of components).
