BS 951 Earth Clamp

What, in your opinion, is the purpose of the nut pointed to below?

  • In BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, it is no longer a requirement for the label used to identify the connection to comply with BS 951 ... because other forms of label were often used, particularly at earth bars and other equipment. In fact, the requirement is now the other way around, and permission is granted to deviate from the standards for instructions and signs by using the label supplied with a BS 951 clamp.

    Ref Regulations 514.9.2 and 514.13.1

  • Graham, I think the "Do Not Remove" part on any label should be omitted because it seem as if, by convention, it is an instruction to plumbing types to remove the connection Wink

Or is taken too literally in defiance of common sense ... I've seen where a plumber had replaced a gas pipe that had a clamp on it - but instead of removing the clamp from the old pipe and refitting it to the new, simply left 6" of the old pipe, complete with clamp, handing by the 10mm² G/Y....

  • GSIUR regulation 18 (2) "Any person who connects any installation pipework to a primary meter shall, in any case where electrical equipotential bonding may be necessary, inform the responsible person that such bonding should be carried out by a competent person."

So technically correct to leave it dangling, although by doing so you are saying you are not competentSlight smile

I don't think we can cure that somehow.

  • That would be an interesting discussion, because the ' - DO NOT REMOVE' part been in the 'Regs since before I was born, even though, for example, the wording in the 14th Edition was slightly different: 'Safety Electrical Earth - Do Not Remove'.

The current wording 'SAFETY ELECTRICAL CONNECTION - DO NOT REMOVE' was brought in in the 15th Ed

Having said that just because we've always done it isn't an excuse for continuing to do so!

  • Even more confusing, whilst a 'competent person' might have to do it under GSUIR, this is something that does not require a 'legal person' registered with a 'competent person certification scheme' to carry out under Part P Thinking

  • Couldn't see "competent person" defined in Part P,  but it references BS7671 2008 amd 1 as the standard (non-ambulatory) which does/did define a competent person.

As for legal person, not sure where that comes from, unless it is the Judge if it all went Pete Tong.

Will schemes now be changing the scene name to "skilled person (electrically) scheme"?

  • Couldn't see "competent person" defined in Part P,

Sorry, my last post post was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

AD-P is the link, relating to Notifiable Work - in this case, the work is most likely non-notifiable and therefore the issue of CPCS (or BC route) never comes into question.

As for legal person, not sure where that comes from

Could be a business, corporation, etc., not just a real human being

Quite so. Do any of the competent person schemes accept non-human persons? NICEIC seems to accept businesses, but how does a business get, e.g., an NVQ?
