3 phase MCB for single phase supply

Hi Guys, quick question that I’ve just been asked and I would like all the opinions and views I can get. So here goes …

Can you utilise a single pole on a 3 phase MCB to supply a single phase circuit. If yes then great, if no then please share why.

  • Yes, it will trip if any one phase is overloaded; but what will be on the other two phases?

  • Other 2 phases are not in use, solely for that single phase supply

  • Use of only one phase of a three phase MCB is fine, perhaps wasteful of material costs and spaces in the distribution board, but not in any way unsafe.

No different to use with an appliance that loads only phase under light load. Or to supply a 3 phase distribution board, that happens to only have the final circuits on one phase loaded.
