Spring release luminaire terminations

Hi

During a discussion with Ansell technical department regarding vapourproof led tornado fittings I mentioned that I was using stranded conduit cable to connect into them. These fittings as with most nowadays have the tool-less terminations that you press the little lever in to insert and remove the cable. Their technical department told me that I had to twist the strands of the stranded cable prior to insertion in the terminal. A previous question that posted relating to this topic a while back regarding wago’s came back with the general consensus that stranded cable be left untwisted to allow the strands to spread out along the contact edge of the wago. The terminals in these Ansell fittings aren’t wago’s as such but presumably employ the same type of construction. However this was the manufacturer of the fitting telling me that and not the manufacturer of the terminals so it’s hard to know what’s the best approach.

Any opinions gratefully received

Peter

  • 134.1.1 ... The installation of electrical equipment shall take account of manufacturers' instructions.

"Take account of" ≠ "thou shalt".

They didn’t however manufacture the terminal block but the fitting as a whole. There were no installation instructions with the fitting or on their website, they happened to mention it to me in an email otherwise I would have been none the wiser

  • I doubt that it much matters, negligible mechanical stress and a current of less than one amp. If it was judged important then I would expect that instructions on or with the fitting would make it clear.

  • I will be daisychaining probably six fittings together using the loop in/ out terminals inside the fitting so the load will increase but probably only to about 500w so a couple of amps but still not much I suppose. Since these terminals are probably of a similar design as wago’s I was treating the cable preparation the same i.e. leave stranded untwisted

  • I suspect the chaps at Ansel are more worried about stray whiskers going somewhere they should not and causing a short  -  the Wago folk are very much about maximising current rating and lowest self heating. In this case I suspect that either termination, done reasonably neatly, is perfectly fine,

    Mike.
