Electrical Qualifications - City and Guilds, EAL or T Levels

Although I am a bear of little brain, is it just me, or is the electrical training industry a complete mess? Having watched the video below, I don't have the foggiest as to what is required to become an electrician these days. The only conclusion I have drawn is that  It seems that they wish to reduce the number of electricians in the UK to nil as quickly as possible.

  • Nothing is required to become an 'electrician' in England.

    You might have to pay someone some money to do any of the three types of work for which the law says you must pay someone some money before doing them - if judged competent (or is it now skilled?).

  • 3 types of work? What are they?

  • (a) the installation of a new circuit;

    (b) the replacement of a consumer unit; or

    (c) any addition or alteration to existing circuits in a special location.

  • have a look at the Entry Requirements for a CPS (Competent Person Scheme) from Napit or NICEIC.  They will list what is needed.  Normally a Level 3 ElectroTechnical qualification and then some BS7671 18th edition certs and a Portfolio of evidence of work and then AM2 qualification leeding ultimately a Gold Card.  They will also have other requirements like insurances and calibrated test equipment.

  • but nothing  compels an electrician to join any such scheme, does it - unless they wish to self notify domestic works. A great many do not.
