Disclaimer for connecting 3rd party generator to customers pa system and other equipment.

As above a charity has asked me to connect, for free a generator to their equipment for an outdoor presentation with

their PA system and a screen. They are supplying the generator, which I will be inspecting for suitability.

I was hoping to get them to sign a disclaimer on the lines of "Joe Blogs Electrical is not responsible for any damage

to equipment ,caused by use of the generator"Wondered if this sounds viable or better to walk away?

  • Just my opinion...

Would you ask a paying customer to agree to such a disclaimer?  If not, then I would say the right options are to:

    • Ttreat it like a paid job, with a 100% discount because you like the charity, or
    • Refuse to do it because of the potential liability it puts on you.
  • Thanks for that Simon, will consider the options.

  • Disclaimers are all very well in contract, but rather more difficult where negligence may have arisen. I stress that I am not impugning your professional abilities here, but if someone were injured through no fault of yours, they may still seek recompense from somebody.

Do you have personal liability or professional indemnity insurance?

  • I think I'd also be worried about damage to (or poor performance of the) equipment - traditional small generators aren't renowned for good voltage regulation, which while might not be an issue for conventional motor type loads, could be a  bit more challenging for your more delicate electronics, especially things like the PA or projector which will likely have massive swings in demand as the sound/video images change. Likewise not all inverter generators are necessarily good with all switch mode type PSUs.

  • Thanks Andy and Chris,I have the insurance, but not sure I want to make a claim on a free gratis job. This job seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

  • It's not entirely clear to me what the scope of your work is when you say 'connect' the generator (which you're not supplying) to some equipment (which you're also not supplying).  Are they asking you to supply the distribution equipment/cabling between the two things they are supplying?

Would you issue documentation under BS7909 for the temporary system you're providing with a defined scope limitation.

As Simon says, think of how you might do it as a paid job and what's involved as if something goes wrong with a bit that you are 'responsible' for then consider the fact that there's a 100% discount may not help you very much?!

  • Then you have answered your own question! I do realise, however, that saying, "no" is usually much more difficult than, "yes".

I think that I would politely decline.

  • Think thats decided then,Its a no from me!

    Thanks for the advice,

                                        Regards,
