opinions of C2 code on satisfactory EICR

I am about to audit a property tested by a contractor.

on the report it has a C2 code but also states rectified, while we like a record of repairs and the previous code assigned, im not sure its correct to have a C2 on a satifactory EICR?

  • Its not the intention of the form to be used quite like that.
So long as it has been rectified it is hopefully no longer a C2, unless the job has been done really badly (!) just an advisory note that something that was once dangerous, has been found and recently corrected.

What is the purpose of your audit ? Perhaps a word with the contractors  about correct use of forms may be in order.

  • Probably needs 2 EICR.  First one be Unsatisfactory EICR and dated.  This would then be followed by the remedial works and an EIC or minor works and finally the 2ND EICR would be satisfactory.

The issue seems to arise depending on who or what company does the EICR.

Small company may do the EICR and correct minor faults or issues as they find them.  Larger company will just do the EICR and then report back what they found at the time of inspect and verification and they would not make modification unless there was a C1.  Then they would only make safe.  Some people may say this is counter intuitive.  Why have 2 visits to site?  Others will say the EICR is just snap shot in time of an inspect and test.  Sometimes it depends on who will do the remedial work.  It is not uncommon for a person to do the EICR and a different people or company to do the remedial work.   Scope of Works may also come into play here.

This could also be site dependant, eg the average UK domestic dwelling vs office block with multiple floors

Personally if it is a quick fix while doing the EICR and time allows I would say do the remedial work and then the need for a C2 is removed.

  • That looks like some organization's model form, so that approach might be encouraged by them

I would say that an EICR does not require rectifications to be recorded (assuming that they are done at the same visit), but nor is their recording prohibited.

I like the approach - it gives me confidence.

  • Purpose of the audit is to check random contractors who work for us to ensure a proper test is being done.

This property also had rcd and cooker switch problems,I'm unsure of the sequence of events as yet.

The model form states.   "Overall assessment of the installation in terms of its suitability for continued use SATISFACTORY / UNSATISFACTORY* (Delete as appropriate) *An unsatisfactory assessment indicates that dangerous(code C1)and/or potentially dangerous (code C2) conditions have been identified. "

I assume that means a satisfactory report cannot by definition have C1 or C2

  • I like the approach - it gives me confidence.

I'd agree 'found it & fixed it' needs to be recorded or you cant see what was done or explain the bill  but to my mind, then the residual code reported should be ' no code' as the problem has already been dealt with. If you must then perhaps have  2 cols, before and after rectification.
