Multicore cables in parallel - hysterisis (eddy currents)

Hi All,

Looking for a bit of a sanity check here!

I have reviewed an installation on site and found a number of circuits with multicore cables in parallel which are glanded into steel gland plates with no slot between the glands. I have raised this as an issue and the contractor is pushing back suggesting the problem only occurs with single cables in parallel and not multicore cables.

I have suggested the installation does not comply with 521.5.1, your comments would be welcome to confirm my sanity!

Thanks

  • I do not believe that eddy currents will be significant with multi core cables in parallel. If the cores of each cable are carrying balanced loads, there will be no eddy currents.

In practice a slight imbalance is inevitable but I would expect the effect of this this to be negligible

  • balanced load are not guaranteed apart from supplies to some of the mechanical equipment, the question is whether the installation is compliant with BS7671 particularly the concern of all circuit conductors being collectively surrounded by ferrous material i.e. through a single aperture?
