Extending cables from existing consumer unit

Hi,

I have an existing install which has a single consumer unit for an entire house. I have added a battery storage system with a backup board and need to move over various circuits so they remain ON during a power failure.

There is a length of large trunking across the top of both units. I have 2 options to bring the cables into the new board:

1) Join the cables inside of the trunking - my question here, are WAGO connectors ok? The plastic lid can only really be removed with a tool or very strong hands!

2) Run a length of trunking under both units, and then extend from the existing consumer unit into the new one. In this instance, the cables will be jointed in CU1 and terminated into CU2. Is this compliant?

My preference would be an external JB but this is very difficult given the location.

Thanks.

  • If an enclosure can be opened without a key or tool (and without the supply being automatically disconnected - think interlocked switch) then there needs to be an internal barrier (to at least IP2X or XXB) that cannot be removed without the use of a key or tool -(416.2.4) - so strong hands plus the ability to take a bare ware out of a terminal without tools (even with non-lever Wagos you're supposed to be able to do that) doesn't obviously comply.

I suppose you could add something to the trunking so it couldn't be opened without tools - say a bit of builder's band secured to the wall with screws?

  • As ever, a picture would help.

If it is the sort of 2 inch trunking which I have at home, I reckon that a tool is usually needed to get started, so I would be happy to consider that it is a suitable enclosure.

Wago boxes only become maintenance-free once you lock the top with a cable clip. You could put some round the trunking if you are worried about the use of a tool to open it.

  • even with non-lever Wagos you're supposed to be able to do that

You can, but it requires a strong pull. The first time that I did it, I expected the stripped end to be a bit mangled, but it was not.

  • I’ll do this, the lid is rock solid and the various angles mean getting it off is a pain in the backside.

  • I’ll put a band around the trunking so it cannot come off. There are literally mini trunking accessories that allow you to wire in singles so this isn’t any different.
