DC isolators and RC62

The RISC document RC62 asks installers to carefully consider the need for DC isolators. It is not unreasonable for insurers to insist that the additional risk associated with the devices is appropriately assessed. This is one of two 100Kw inverters. They are both housed in a purpose-built concrete block structure abutting a large door manufacturing plant so fire spread may be reasonably controlled. However, do we really need to have an isolator on each string. Likely done this way as it connects to the individual MPPT inputs?

Hi Lyle, this is all way above my pay grade, so apologies up front.

Think I found the installation instructions here https://www.sigenergy.com/en/support/download?solution=download-business&product=business-sigen-pv-inverter&documentType=manual&downloadIds=sig-dl-file-1-en-1981

There are clearances which I believe the metal wiring tray falls foul of to the left and below.

The disconnectors would seem to also fall foul of these clearances.

Also bending radii of DC cables have 150mm straight lengths before the bend

Since all the DC connections to the inverter are in the middle of the inverter there will have to be S-bends if going into those disconnectors.

The DC connections themselves are manufacturer parts, different for + and - , the switches (1 for each bank) must be off before disconnecting, but the cables may well still be live, so I assume the manufacturer has thought of this and made them fingerproof.

  • There does look to be a bit of a get-out though...

To ensure optimal performance of the device, it is suggested that the installation distance between the device and surrounding obstacles be planned with reference to the diagram. If the installation site is well-ventilated, the optimal solution may be deployed based on actual requirements.
