Fixed Wiring Inspections cost

hi all,

Looking for some guidance. We carry out fixed wiring inspections on our Uk commercial properties every 5 years.  These are mixed office, warehouse and assembly / lab spaces within 3 buildings.

We have an on site electrician for the general maintenance / small jobs as well as a separate service for PAT testing.  Our regular competent contractor has quoted nearly £100k to carry out the testing which seems massive to all the costs I see quoted online and I find it hard to believe our competitors abroad are spending this kind of sum every 5 years.  i know it is hard to give an opinion without size and we use circa 2300Mwh per annum but any thoughts as to whether this is completely off track or not?

regards

Carl

  • thanks everyone for your inputs:-

I have managed to establish we have 2500 circuits and about 115 distribution boards across the 3 buildings so actually overall a  low cost per circuit.

are others testing every circuit and board very 5 years or just a portion of them?

  • Sampling is perfectly permissible in a large installation. So, you could I&T all the final circuits in a 20%+ sample of final distribution boards, or 20%+ of final circuits in all of the DBs, but not both.

Ideally, the samples should be random, else there is a risk that some circuits miss out every time.

Another approach would be to I&T 1/5 of the installation each year on a 5-yearly cycle.
