Switzerland

The Switzerland Local Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people. All events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

The Local Network aims to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

IET Switzerland - Visit to Urania Observatory (Zürich, Switzerland)

Event Timing: Saturday 12 November 2022, 17:30 - 21:00

What distinguishes stars from planets? How many moons does Jupiter have? Admire satellite images of astronauts' footprints on the moon or learn how a supernova is encoded on the Swiss 20 note? Under the majestic wooden dome of the observatory, the guided tours provide an insight into astronomy and explain exciting facts about the universe. When the sky is clear, your own observations through the telescope are possible.

The lectures, supported by pictures and animations, make a visit to the observatory a celestial experience at any time of year and regardless of the weather.

The evening lectures are suitable for interested children from about 9 years of age. If there are several children, the rule is that there is one accompanying adult for every three children.

This is an open event, held in English, so please register at the official website.

Please do also register here, so we know how many people to expect - we will visit a nearby Bar in the city afterwards.
Finally, please bring warm clothes - let's hope for clear skies, so we can see something spectacular!

1) Register and pay for the event and all family members at https://urania-sternwarte.ch/

2) Register also here with the IET system so that we can get an idea of numbers. Include a telephone number in case we need to contact you.

Directions
5 minutes walk from Zurich main station. Next to Urania car park / Urania guard. Between Bahnhofstrasse and Rudolf Brun Bridge.

Entrance
Uraniastrasse 9, courtyard passage to Deutsche Bank in front of Brasserie Lipp, doors open 30 minutes before the tour starts.

A small lift leads to one floor below the observatory. Alternatively, there are about 250 steps leading up to the dome. We therefore recommend arriving at the entrance around 20 minutes early. After the start of the tour, admission is no longer possible, and tickets will be forfeited.

Astronomical tours of the observatory can only be attended via this entrance, as access control takes place at the bottom of the entrance. If you reach the observatory via the restaurant or the bar, you will have to go down again to the observatory entrance.

Accessibility
A lift leads up to one floor below the observatory. From there it is about 25 more steps up to the dome. For your own observations through the telescope, you also need to climb up onto a platform. Unfortunately, due to the listed nature of the observatory, it is not possible to make the infrastructure wheelchair accessible.
