Have you ever stopped to think about just how much of our daily lives relies on electromagnetics?
From mobile communications and wireless technologies to power systems, transport and consumer electronics, electromagnetics sits behind many of the technologies we depend on every day. Yet it's such a broad field that it can sometimes be easy to overlook just how much is happening across the discipline.
That's where the IET Electromagnetics Technical Network comes in. The network brings together engineers, researchers and industry professionals with a shared interest in electromagnetics, creating opportunities to learn, share knowledge and explore the latest developments across the sector.
Led by Chair, Alex Gavrilakis, and supported by a committee of IET member volunteers from around the world, the network covers a wide range of specialist topics, including:
- electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
- electrostatics
- low-frequency power fields
- RF and microwave technologies
- as well as the many applications that connect academic research with real-world engineering challenges
One of the things I particularly like about this community is the breadth of expertise it brings together. Whether your work is focused on research, product development, testing, systems engineering or emerging technologies, there is a good chance you'll find something relevant within the network's activities.
The Technical Network regularly hosts webinars and knowledge-sharing events that explore both fundamental concepts and developing trends. Recent sessions have included topics such as electromagnetic field simulation using Python and a fascinating look at developments in microwave technology. If you missed them, many of the sessions are available on demand, making it easy to catch up whenever you have time.
Technical Networks play an important role within the IET. They help connect people who might never otherwise meet, bringing together different perspectives from industry and academia and creating spaces where questions can be asked, ideas exchanged and new collaborations formed.
For those already working in electromagnetics, the network offers an opportunity to stay connected with developments across the field. For those looking to learn more, it's a great place to discover new topics, hear from experts and broaden your understanding of an area that underpins so much of modern engineering.
