Almost waited for the DeLorean to warp into the event as Mark Calnan CEng FIMechE MIET, Director of Electric Blue gave an excellent talk on 'How can we overcome the challenges of rolling out zero emission vehicles?' event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network.Click here to read an account of the evening lecture where Mark spoke about different types of chargers that are needed for electric vehicles and why we are likely to see more e-vehicles on our roads.
"1/3 of Heathrow’s pollution comes from surface transmissions, so the drive for Electric Vehicles (EV) will not solve all air pollution problems, but Electric Vehicles can help reduce inner urban air pollution" discussed Mark Calnan CEng FIMechE MIET, Director of Electric Blue at the 'How can we overcome the challenges of rolling out zero emission vehicles?' event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network. This scenario is likely to be applicable to most towns and cities throughout the UK, however with the distance that an electric vehicle can travel, Electric Blue's test case to use saloon licenses from a particular council has helped prove the sustainability benefits that an EV Taxi can have. Interestingly their proof of concept identified that the 418 principle…

On the 28 th November 2018, IET Malaysia Network has partnered up with KPMG Risk and Management to organize the first KPMG-IET Cybertechnology Challenge. The event was held at a shared venue, where KPMG is organizing their KPMG Cybersecurity Challenge National Finals concurrently. In the KPMG-IET Cybertechnology challenge, participants are challenged to solve various puzzles in a virtual “escape room” scenario, passing through various levels before finally hacking into an IET themed IoT safe box and opening it from the inside. The challenge was participated by 40 students, forming 8 teams of 5 students each. However, since the event was held in conjunction with the KPMG Cybersecurity challenge, there are more than 300 students and visitors on site during the event. At the same time, an IET…

In March, leaders from the RAIN research hub, along with representatives from its industrial partners and the regulator, will run a first of a kind workshop. They’ll cover their work on robotic systems, likely applications and potential impact on the nuclear industry: Dr Joaquin Carrasco , University of Manchester and RAIN Dr Rob Buckingham , Director UKAEA , Head of RACE Peter Smart, Rolls Royce Steve Frost , Superintending Nuclear Inspector, ONR It is widely recognized that the nuclear industry has a range of difficult working environments that can limit the ability for safe human access and it is becoming increasingly common for emerging technologies, such as robotic and autonomous systems and equipment, to be considered for deployment. To date, robotic systems have had limited impact on…

Introducing automation into a smaller scale production environment can be difficult. Here we look at the five basic stages of an automation project: Stage 1 – Identify. Stage 2 – Develop & Finance. Stage 3 – Build. Stage 4 – Commission. Stage 5 – Run & monitor. As the Project Leader for a manufacturing facility, I get to come up with and implement all sorts of projects – Lean, Excellence, Quality, Asset Replacement etc. The one type of project I have always had problems with is Automation. I’m not talking about Industry 4.0, the integrated manufacturing revolution that I read about and get rather excited by the seemingly endless possibilities. No. Just plain and simple Automation – “ The technology by which a process or procedure is performed without human assistance” The reason for my…
