In 2012, I had the opportunity to research emerging strategic changes within the Chip Industry. At the time, ARM was the new entrant gaining mass adoption based off their chipset design - which compared to Intel was better at energy saving during operational tasks, where, Intel remained strong in its ability to provide solid computing power. Since then, there have been many new Chip Set entrants into the market that have used economies of scale to provide both, low power consumption rate and strong computing power. As we move into the world of SMART devices, the interactions between chipset and its OS’s will be effected and so it is of no surprise that security was seen less of a priority than chipset performance i.e. moores law. 10TH PUBLIC SEMINAR ON 'PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES' IN THE CARIBBEAN'

The 10th Public seminar on Project Management Practices in the Caribbean ' held on December 09, 2017 at UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago was a huge success!!! There were approximately over 130 persons in attendance. The event was well organized and the presentations were top class. The IET TTLN wishes to thank Prof. Kit Fai Pun of UWI for organising such an excellent event. The IET TTLN looks forward to collobarating with UWI and all other professional networks in Trinidad and Tobago in holding such events in 2018 and beyond. 2018! Year Of The Smart Product.

My January blog post last year, highlighted that different fields of technology will be coming together to create specific SME based commodity services, and with that, how specific field based devices will help drive the concept of technology-as-a-commodity. So, for 2018, the theme of field devices will continue, with specific interests on how smart devices are transitioning into Smart SME commodity ecosystems - maybe this is the year that next-gen technology becomes the norm. Coming into 2018, I attended the New Year's Eve celebration at the Savoy Place (IET London). Circus Came To Town For Xmas - Cirque Du Soliel (IET London Network).

Known for creating magical shows, Mark Ager, CEO of Stage Technologies, talked through how the revolving stage was created for the Cirque Du Soliel's production KA. The interactions of the gantry crane was talked about how each revision allowed better fluidity to manage the revolving stage. The stage itself, known as the Sand Cliff Deck, has 80 steel pegs that shoot out when required by the performers allowing them to flip around the revolving stage to give gravity defying performances. The stage moves in ft/seconds, uses pistons, pumps and hydraulic cylinders that when combined brings the stage to life. Almost 10 similar stages are used throughout the perfomance. End Of Term One On The Ottawa LN BBC Micro:bit Project

The Ottawa LN sponsored three high school teachers with 80 micro:bits each. Yesterday I was invited to an end-of-term session with one of them, and quite the event it turned out to be! The high-school teacher, with his class of 15 or so 1`4-year olds, had joined forces with a junior school class of about 30 9-10 year olds. The session yesterday was an innovative combination of the two classes, with the students from the high school mentoring their juniors. A glance at the photos will give the flavour. The combined class spent over two hours producing a Christmas-themed gift to take home for each junior child. Some made tree decorations with Micro:bit stars, others made wrist watches that told the time (more or less), one enterprising pair made a messaging system camouflaged as smart phones…

South Yorkshire Young Professional DRAX Visit Nov. 2017.

Back in November 26 of our local Young Professionals went on a site visit to the DRAX Power station, in Selby, North Yorkshire. During the visit they learnt that DRAX now uses USA imported biomass, over coal, as it is cleaner, especially being a waste product of the logging industry. They were also reassured of how DRAX could provide electricity should they be without their main generators, got a detailed breakdown of how the main generators worked. As well as a very formative tour of the vast site, which saw our YP's enjoying the views from 'oversized golf carts', they also got to visit the main building which showed the vast array of control units, each generator needing its own control station. University Teams Pass The Chequered Flag!

Congratulations to the Nova Racing team at Delft Technical University who won the MotoE Racing championship this year in only their second year of competing and the Bath University Zero team who were runners up. MotoE is an official European Championship for electric motorcycle racers, teams from the across the globe, battle each other in five rounds within Europe for the privilege to call themselves the MotoE European Cup Champions. It has been supported by the IET Automotive & Road Transport Systems TPN for several years as it raises awareness of electric motorcycles and the profile of the IET and TPN. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Visit

The Trelleborg Corporation in El Segundo designs and manufactures high precision seals for the aerospace and automotive industry and a small group of IET members and guests were fortunate enough to get a tour of this facility. With much of the tooling and manufacturing being carried out by technicians with a lifetimes experience on the tools it was inspiring to see what can still be done with minimal automation. The products manufactured on site are used in aircraft systems such as landing gear, hydraulic units and other subsystems which have rotating or reciprocating elements using working fluids or lubricants ranging from 7XX series passenger aircraft through to 4th and 5th generation fighter aircraft. Project Controls EXPO delivered its 7th industry event on 16 November 2017. It’s objective is to provide significant practical and theoretical awareness on Project Controls process, tools and techniques to its delegates. This show is for those working or have an interest within the complete spectrum of Projects Controls, and is held annually at the Emirates Arsenal stadium in London. There were seminars from a wide range of industries with 43 speakers, also showcased were some of the latest technology tools and providers. IET Brunei Technical Visit To A Fish Farm

Saturday, 9 th December 2017. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei conducted a technical visit to a fish farm at Syarikat Hajah Rosni Binti Haji Kassim dan Anak-Anak located at the vicinity of Kaingaran Island near Kampong Pengkalan Sibabau. A total of 14 members and 8 non members joined the visit. The group were welcomed and briefed by the owner of the fish farm, Awang Haji Bakar bin Haji Chuchu. The business operates 117 fish cages over a one-hectare area. Fishes farmed here include sea bass, grouper, red snapper, yellow-spotted trevally and green mussels. Last year, the company produced 13 metric-tonnes of barramundi, grouper, and other types of fish, as well as green clams for the local market.
