  • What The ARTS TPN Got Up To In 2014

    During 2014, the ARTS TPN had the opportunity to get involved and support a number of excellent activities:   Road User Charging in UK, Europe and USA Seminar ibus System   lecture in Bath – joint with Somerset & West Wiltshire Network   Pete James the TPN Chairman gave a talk at a conference in Canada and presented a TPN award for Best Endeavour to the University of Ohio, Electric Motorcycle Racing team ‘Buckeye Current’.   EVs and their Appetite for Power – this event was held in Milton Keynes joint with the Buckinghamshire Network and three speakers gave different perspectives on this topic.    MotoERacing – the Network supported this new Electric Motorcycle racing series which culminated in a series finale at Silverstone.  You can access some great footage via the link, including a ride…

  • Toyota Open up Hydrogen Patents

    Toyota is following the example made by Tesla in 2014, by freely sharing nearly 6,000 patents it owns which cover hydrogen fuel cell technology. The announcement came after its showcase of the Miraj hydrogen driven car at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. The portfolio of patents covers fuel cell stacks, high pressure hydrogen talks, software control systems and industrial processes in generating/supplying the gas.     For the global Transportation and Logistics industry, more FDI outward investment from the US, Germany and the Netherlands, generates 40%, 13% and 5% of new projects, respectively. For inward FDI investment US, China and the UK, are attracting a respective 36%, 5% and 4% of projects. This investment provides logistic opportunities for courier business. This is what I researched a few years ago, now, the massive uptake of mobile devices demonstrates opportunity for new methods of business. Companies are now looking to focus on service satisfaction, beyond just click and collect, or dropping your shopping to local pick-up stations for collection.  The change in business allows innovative business methods to be tested.   • Hack Targets Industrial Plant Causing Massive Damage

    Sophisticated hack causes massive damage to steelworks The most significant hack since Stuxnet targeted Iran’s uranium enrichment programme in 2010 caused massive damage to a German steelworks, according to a report published this week by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Whilst the Sony hack caused the release of film star emails, a Bond film script and cancellation of film screenings, grabbing media attention, the significance of deliberate physical damage caused by sophisticated network intrusion has passed largely unnoticed (in mainstream media). This is probably the only publicly known incident where physical damage to a plant has been deliberately caused by malware since Stuxnet.   • Preliminary Discussions With BG Trrinidad & Tobago On The Road To Chartered Engineering

    On Friday 19th December, representatives of BG Trinidad & Tobago, Jonathan Kacal, Christopher Downes and Jason Look Yee, were keen to discuss and develop plans for an upcoming seminar to introduce the IET, the Local Network and the routes to professional registration with their engineers and technicians. Both myself and Gerald Mendes, represented our network in this informal meeting to understand the specific needs of the BG T&T group and provide key insights into the specific activities and avenues that the LN and the IET can proviide the oil and gas company.     The third Industrial Engineering & Management conference was successfully held on the 5th and 6th December at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine in the Engineering faculty.     on 30th October the IET Manufacturing Technical and Professional Network organised an event on Product Advancement with Research and Development Technology at TAR University, Penang Campus - this was the 1st public event in Asia Pacific. The theme of the event was current technologies and knowhow in the field of manufacturing research and product development solution.     When you sign up to the IET Mentoring Service as a mentee and are paired with a mentor, or you are allocated a suitable mentor in-company, you are expected, as the mentee, to drive the relationship and take charge of your own development. This blog will advise you on ways to benefit from having a mentor and what you can do to ensure you make the most of your opportunities. Contracting the Mentoring relationship Once you are paired with your mentor it will be your responsibility as the mentee to drive the mentoring relationship and for you to make initial contact with your mentor.
