Ian Naylor Chairman Ian joined Threepwood in July 2015 as a Principal Consultant and he is a Chartered Electrical Engineer. Prior to this he worked at EA Technology as a Team Manager and Key Account Director.  Ian has worked on many projects around the world including specifications and maintenance documentation.  Ian began his career as a colliery electrician before passing his electrical degree in Huddersfield.  He then worked as a Research and Development Engineer at Merlin Gerin in Leeds before moving to the asset management section of Yorkshire…

  • IET Diamond Scholarship

    Watch Mhairi Galloway explain how our IETDiamond scholarship has helped her at university.  Diamond Jubilee Scholarships were awarded for the first time in 2013 and Mhairi started studying at University of Glasgow. Scholarship winners will each receive an IET Scholarship of at least £1,000 per year, for up to three years for Bachelors students and four years for MEng students. Winners will also receive free membership of the IET for the duration of their course, if not already received as an IET Academic Partner with their University. Approximately 100 Scholarships will be available in 2016. Scholarship winners are expected to be ambassadors for the IET and engineering.     The perimeter platforms of the 90's that secured and kept stable most TCP/IP networks might now provide clarity on how networks designed at TCP/IP layer 2 and 3 can help with securing cloud infrastructures i.e. modern networks. Cloud based platforms offer high level of functionality at layer 7, though through standardisation, there are some satisfactory mitigative controls designed. For the agile modern network, compensatory controls through policies and procedures might not provide the granularity of oversight that customers might require.     If you haven’t been keeping up with science, you’ll be forgiven for not knowing: graphene is going to change the world. Discovered in Manchester in 2004, graphene is a two-dimensional material that's stronger than steel, but also incredibly light. It canconduct electricity and heat. What's more, one sheet - around a metre squared in size and a single atom thick (so thin it can't be seen with the naked eye) - can support the weight of a 4kg cat.  No wonder many have called it a ‘miracle material’.   • Dartmouth graduated more women than men in engineering this year

    Dartmouth just became the first national research university to graduate more women than men in the engineering department. More women have been going into engineering in the last several years, according to theAmerican Society for Engineering Education (AASE), and women made up 37 percent of the class in Dartmouth’s engineering school in 2015. But women tipped the scales this year at a whopping 54 percent at Dartmouth — 34 percent higher than the national average. Read more...

    My previous post covered the key challenges that engineers face in order to insure defence of the UK’s National Critical Infrastructure and stability of crucial Safety-Critical Systems in the context of Cyber Security threats such as armed conflicts around the world.     The  BBC micro:bit  is the spiritual successor of the BBC Micro of the 1980s, which itself introduced a generation of children to computing. The BBC micro:bit carries on this 30 year tradition and does it 18 times faster and is 70 times smaller than its predecessor.     An intelligent beehive designed by a Loughborough University student is hoping to make beekeeping simpler and more accessible. Ellie MacLeod has developed a self-monitoring hive aimed at novices, in the hope that it will inspire more people to take up beekeeping and help boost the number of honey bees, which has declined massively in recent years.   • Cambridge Rock Festival

    The IET and the I Mech E arranged a joint visit to the Cambridge Rock Festival on Thursday 4 August for a behind the scenes tour.  Although not everyone who attended was a rock fan, the visit was a great success providing an opportunity to view the sound and power systems and the outside displays.  Radio Caroline and Cambridge 105 gave a walk around their recording and broadcast facilities. Enthusiastic volunteers help construct the facilities each year which are extensive and complex.  The "Green Room" providing a rest and preparation area for the bands was not as glamorous as envisaged but helped to demonstrate the commitment of those who deliver the festival. Thanks go to Dave Roberts, the Festival Director, and his staff who took the time to escort us around the site.
