    Rohde & Schwarz are initiating a quest to find the most innovative and unusual uses for their Scope Rider - a new portable lab spec oscilloscope . Suggest a fun use for the scope in this competition and get the chance to make it happen, and win a scope or GoPro camera. Filmed by IET.tv R&S have sent a scope on a journey to near space and back whilst measuring its altitude and external temperature, pressure, and acceleration.   • Appeal For More Female Engineers To Have Their Work Published

    On National Women in Engineering Day 2016, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for more female engineers to capitalise on their knowledge and expertise by having their work published in its world-renowned publications and information services. The IET publishes a range of widely respected publications and information services for engineers and technicians, and is making the appeal due to the worryingly low number of female engineers contributing to its publications. For example, only 1% of the 800 editorial board members serving across the IET’s journal portfolio are female. Read more...

  • The IET in the National Media for National Women in Engineering Day

    Naomi Climer appeard on Women’s Hour (she’s on 2:45 into the programme) this morning and she is also due on Sky News at 14:45 today.  The subject of both interviews are National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) and Naomi’s placing in the Daily Telegraph’s Top 50 Women in Engineering list, published in today’s Daily Telegraph.  Other IET members in the list include Faye Banks, our youngest female Fellow and Eleanor Stride, previous winner of the A F Harvey Prize.   In addition, we have also arranged for Abbie Hutty, previous IET YWE winner to appear on Sky News this evening at 18:30, again on the subject of NWED. Held on the date from the film when Marty travels to the future, the fully transformed electric DeLorean will be on show with David Laverty, who project managed the EV project, on hand to explain the specific technological challenges with the conversion project.     Congratulations to IET Scotland and the SEM Technical Group on winning the CC-UK award for Best Engagement with Under 40s or students. David Ritchie (Chair IET Scotland) left receiving the certificate from Davy Thielens (Chair CC-UK) IET Scotland and the SEM Technical group scooped the CC-UK award at the Communities Volunteer Confernece 2016 for their 5 lecture, 4 venue and 1200 student engagement Christmas Lecture.     On Wednesday 8 June, London Central hosted David Cash and Julian Storr at Savoy Place, two internet security experts from NCC, to show us 'How to Hack a Bank'!   The speakers navigated through multiple sources of information available in the public domain, together with the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), to highlight how easy it is to gather personal information using means available to everyone on the internet. We were given real life examples of Physical Device Planting and other methods such as Phishing, attacks on External Infrastructure and Malware execution, which can be used to gain access on the system of a bank, government department and others organisations.   David and Julian summarised most of the threats in a demonstration, where they used access to credentials to compromised…

  • Women in Automotive Engineering - National Women in Engineering Day

    Thursday 23rd June is National Women in Engineering Day so the IET Automotive and Road Transport Systems Network are taking a look at some of the inspiring women of the automotive industry. Claudia Parsons (15 August 1900 – 5 June 1998)  was a pioneering engineer, intrepid traveller, and author. She was one of the very first women in England to graduate in engineering and later became the first woman to ‘circumnavigate the globe by car. In 1919 Claudia found out from the newly formed Women’s Engineering Society that Diploma courses in Engineering were being introduced at Loughborough Technical College (now Loughborough University). She applied and was accepted, one of only three women engineering students in the whole college.  Claudia Parsons graduated from Loughborough with a Diploma in Automobile…

Dorothée Aurélie Marianne Pullinger, MBE (13 January 1894 – 28 January 1986) was a pioneering automobile engineer and businesswoman.   In 1910, she began work as a draftsperson at the Paisley works of Scottish automobile firm of Arrol-Johnston, the oldest and largest Scottish car manufacturer, where she trained under her father, a well-known car designer and Managing Director.  Pullinger stayed at Arrol-Johnston until WW1 when production changed from cars to airplanes. Pullinger was then appointed female supervisor in charge of 7000 female war workers of the very large munitions facility operated by Vickers…

    The winning presentation was made by Diandra Ragoo with her project titled " URI-GO". Our local network was proud to have once again hosted a final competition with innovative students from both the University of the West Indies and the University of Trinidad and Tobago.  This event proved that knowledge, passion, innovation and entrepreneurship continues to drive the Caribbean Communities.   • National Women in Engineering Day - Amy Johnson

    As 23 June is National Women in Engineering Day #NWED2016, I thought I would write about Amy Johnson , who although known for her record breaking flights, was also the first women to receive a Ground Engineer’s ‘C’ Licence from the Air Ministry. Amy developed a passion for flying at Stag Lane Aerodrome in London and achieved her full pilots licence in July 1929 after making her first solo flight in June the same year. Having received her pilots licence, Amy knew that if she wanted to earn a living from flying, it was vital that she understood how an aircraft worked and what to do it if did not.  Although having only recently passed her pilot’s licence, Amy was keen to push ahead and was already considering the possibility of longer solo trips and also had an ambition to be an agent for De Havilland…

    I will be attending the TES National Strategy Launch on Tuesday 5th July 12-30pm to be held at The IET, Savoy House.  The event is being supported by Cranfield Univerity, Rolls Royce and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. In their advertising they state that "Following the launch of this initiative at the Houses of Parliament in September 2015 and the setting up of a steering committee to oversee the work the final strategy document and its associated supporting documents will be published on the 5th of July 2016. A series of regional workshops were held and their outputs analysed".   • National Women In Engineering Day - Helen Sharman

    23 rd June is National Women in Engineering Day #NWED2016  and to celebrate this occasion, we are publishing some blogs to highlight the contribution Women have made to Science & Engineering.    This blog is about Helen Sharman who was the first British astronaut and is officially also a cosmonaut, as her space mission to the Russian MIR space station was a joint venture with the Soviet Union.   Helen spent 7 days, 21 hours and 13 minutes in space and at the age of 27 she was one of the youngest people to go into space.   Her mission to MIR began when she responded to a UK radio advert in 1989 ‘ Astronaut wanted – no experience required”.
