Fellow IET Londoners, After years of leading the Teddington section of our London Network, David Lindsley has decided to hand over the reins to Cathryn. Rest assured, he will remain an active participant of the Teddington team, so you will not have seen the last of him. Coming Wednesday the 5 th before their event we will have a moment to thank David for all his efforts as chair and to officially welcome as new chair. The IET has been approached by John Peat, one of the Directors of the B17 Steam Locomotive Trust to ascertain if any members are interested in getting involved with the project. This is an exciting project to rebuild a locomotive that played a great role in our railway heritage and its hoped that IET members will consider getting involved with the Trust.

Google has unveiled a new experimental smartphone capable of mapping the surroundings in 3D and in real-time. Called Project Tango, the smartphone, still in early stages of development, will soon be made available to researchers and software developers to test and develop applications. Google’s California-based Advanced Technology and Projects group has been secretly working on the device for the past year and only introduced the gadget yesterday in a video on YouTube. “Mobile devices today suppose the physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen, yet we all live in a three-dimensional world,” said project leader Johnny Lee in the video. “Our goal is to give mobile devices a human scale understanding of space and motion.” Google has collaborated with universities, research labs and industrial…

It is hoped that this excellent resource will prove not only useful as an educational tool for school children and other learners but will also prove a dynamic cultural resource for the Engineering Community in Scotland and beyond. There are also plans to set-up some permanent displays at various physical locations. To keep the Hall fresh and inclusive we are asking members to suggest who they think should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. For many years ‘The White Book’ has been distributed to all IET members in Scotland as the vehicle to disseminate information regarding events and contacts within the Scottish network. It has in the past been a very successful way to disseminate information. Things have of course moved on in the online age and for several years within the various committees there has been discussion of how to try and disseminate information more efficiently to our members. Web pages and email alerts have become the more standard way to inform members of events. Although cost was a factor in our deliberations it was not the only factor that was considered in the decision to stop sending out a hard copy to each member. We also had to take into account the amount of members who can access this information online…

Spike Aerospace who are designing the S-512 supersonic jet says it plans to replace the cabin windows with thin display screens embedded in the wall of the fuselage. It will certainly make long haul flights more interesting, although those people who suffer from claustrophobia may find it stressful.
Founding members discuss the creation of the new on campus group and how it will help the university’s engineering students through lectures, workshops and networking opportunities. The Newcastle University IET on campus group was the idea of a PhD student Chris Spargo, after he chaired the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering’s Annual Research Conference, attended by the IET’s academic account manager, Victoria Critchlow and IET president Barry Brooks.
