    The Royal Institute of Navigation is pleased to announce plans for the International Navigation Conference 2016 , which will address the most cutting-edge issues in Positioning, Navigation and Timing . Of global importance, INC 16 will feature the very latest developments in topics such as GNSS, indoor positioning, autonomous transport, security against cyber attack, resilience, and quantum technology .   • Hinkley Point for Cyber Security: how safe is the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure?

    My previous post covered the key challenges that engineers face in order to insure defence of the UK’s National Critical Infrastructure and stability of crucial Safety-Critical Systems in the context of Cyber Security threats such as armed conflicts around the world. This time we can consider how international politics could have impact on homeland security as well.   As the UK Government put the Hinkley Point nuclear power station project under review, China’s ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming warned that wider relationships between the two countries are at risk: “Right now, the China-UK relationship is at a critical historical juncture… I hope the UK will keep its door open to China”. His Excellency Liu of course meant the open door to massive (up to 40 billion pounds) investment from China…

  • The BBC Micro:bit is Available to Purchase

    The  BBC micro:bit  is the spiritual successor of the BBC Micro of the 1980s, which itself introduced a generation of children to computing. The BBC micro:bit carries on this 30 year tradition and does it 18 times faster and is 70 times smaller than its predecessor. This powerful handheld, fully programmable, computer designed by the BBC and a number of partners to encourage children to get actively involved in writing software and building new things that will be controlled by it.   Read more...

  • Intelligent hive aims to boost honeybee population

    An intelligent beehive designed by a Loughborough University student is hoping to make beekeeping simpler and more accessible. Ellie MacLeod has developed a self-monitoring hive aimed at novices, in the hope that it will inspire more people to take up beekeeping and help boost the number of honey bees, which has declined massively in recent years.   • Cambridge Rock Festival

    The IET and the I Mech E arranged a joint visit to the Cambridge Rock Festival on Thursday 4 August for a behind the scenes tour.  Although not everyone who attended was a rock fan, the visit was a great success providing an opportunity to view the sound and power systems and the outside displays.  Radio Caroline and Cambridge 105 gave a walk around their recording and broadcast facilities. Enthusiastic volunteers help construct the facilities each year which are extensive and complex.  The "Green Room" providing a rest and preparation area for the bands was not as glamorous as envisaged but helped to demonstrate the commitment of those who deliver the festival. Thanks go to Dave Roberts, the Festival Director, and his staff who took the time to escort us around the site.

    Congratulations to Omar Boursalie (top picture left) from McMaster University for being the runner-up of 2016 Americas PATW! The Americas event was a successful one with 28 attendees.  Keep it up, Toronto YPs! After completing his PhD in optical fibre sensors in 1984, Dr Philp became Technical Director of the UK Industrial Instruments division of what is now ABB.     Most of us are now familiar with the IET’s CPD policy but not everyone is aware that watching relevant videos on IET.tv counts towards your annual continuing professional development target. How does IET.tv relate to CPD? Watching IET.tv videos is one of the many free member benefits that can be used to provide CPD engagement. The Professional Development department has worked with IET.tv to emphasise the value of incorporating watching IET.tv videos within their CPD activities.  A huge amount of material is available on the IET.tv platform containing over 8,000 videos, some of which have direct CPD value.     The Robots are Coming – a video featuring a lecture from Nick Hawes held at York University Festival of Ideas, 2016, an event sponsored by the IET North Yorkshire Network. Dr Nick Hawes is a Reader in Autonomous Intelligent Robotics in the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. His research applies techniques from artificial intelligence to allow robots to perform useful tasks for, or with, humans in everyday environments. He is particularly interested in how robots can understand the world around them, how it changes over time  and how robots can exploit this knowledge to perform tasks with more “intelligence”.
