  • Lockheed Martin - Space Fundamentals Training Program - call for candidates

    Lockheed Martin is currently seeking two candidates for their Space Fundamentals Training Program. (SFTP). SFTP was established in 2015 as the means of inspiring students to enter the space/aerospace field and provide them with space education and professional development. Over the course of 8 weeks, students complete a 5-week online curriculum developed by Lockheed Martin as well as a 3-week travel component that includes hands-on instruction, networking opportunities with industry professionals and practicum experience.   • Transport Section: Technical Visit To Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL)

    Technical visits are real highlights of our Singapore Network activity, presenting opportunities and insights that are difficult to obtain without the reach and influence of a professional organisation. 20 members and aspiring engineers were able to appreciate such an experience with the visit on 12th May 2016 to tunnel works on the Woodlands section of the Thomson-East Coast Line. This 43km new line will add 31 new stations to the existing rail network, with 7 interchange stations to link with the East-West, North-South, North-East, Circle and Downtown Lines. The visiting team assembled at the Hampshire headquarters of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and each person was issued with the personal protection equipment essential for entering the T206 construction site where the Earth Pressured…

  • 150th Anniversary Of The Transatlantic Telegraph Cable - Lecture At Savoy Place 16 June 2016

    As part of the 150th anniversary of the first durable Trans-Atlantic telegraph cables, Donard de Cogan is presenting a series of talks on the great enterprise and its aftermath. On 21st March the Norwich Engineering Society heard about the people who reported the events, using material from the IET Archives. On 16th April the IET Ireland Network were told of the Irish dimension. This lecture in Savoy Place will trace the various expeditions (1857, 1858, 1865 and 1866). It will discuss the lessons learned from the early disasters and near disasters and will cover the techniques used for testing the cable during manufacture as well as during submersion; all part of a learning exercise that ensured ultimate success during summer 1866.     The PATW Cyprus LN competition was held on 7th May 2016 at 9am at the European University Cyprus. There were 11 participants. The participants were divided into two groups; each group had a winner and runner up who then qualified to the Local final which was right after the two Heats finished.     Professor Timothy Evans, National Director of Clinical Productivity is another one of our expert speakers, presenting at The Future Of Medicine - The Role Of Doctors In 2025. Timothy Evans qualified in 1979 at the University of Manchester, and underwent post registration medical training at the London postgraduate hospitals, and at the University of Sheffield where he completed a PhD.   • Apollo 13 - How NASA Saved The Crew Of The Crippled Moon Mission

    We’ve all seen the movie and watched Tom Hanks (as Jim Lovell) and his fellow crew members survive the near catastrophic explosion that crippled the Apollo 13 spacecraft, but what was it actually like being in Mission Control on the 11 th 17 th April in 1970?   The planned lunar landing was instantly called off and the new challenge was to get the spacecraft safely back to Earth. When the carbon dioxide in the three astronaut’s exhaled breath threatened to asphyxiate them, the crew improvised a filter device, which had been tested in Mission Control, to make the air breathable.     The volunteers of the IET Anglian Coastal Network organise events and other activities covering engineering and technology topics for engineers and also members of the public who have an interest in engineering and technology. Even if you’re not a member of the IET, you’re still welcome to join us at any of our events . We cover the areas of both Norfolk and Suffolk and organise activities in both counties.   • First IET CoderDojo Club was a Success!

    The IET first ever CoderDojo club took place on Saturday 30 April, at our Stevenage office! CoderDojo  is a global movement of free, volunteer-led,  community based programming clubs for young people. At a Dojo, young people, between 7 and 17, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology in an informal and creative environment. In addition to learning to code attendees meet like minded people and are exposed to the possibilities of technology. I had just over 30 children attend, some accompanied by their parents. The feedback received so far has been fantastic and a lot of the children are excited to join future sessions. The first club focused on building a website and a game using HTML and Scratch.
