  • The 4th Smart Display Research Group Meeting 2017

    The 4th Smart Display research group Meeting (SDM) of the IIEEJ was held in the Science and Engineering School, Waseda University, on 16th December 2017, under the chairmanship of Dr. M. Matsumoto, Prof. Emeritus of Waseda Univ., former IET-JN Chairman. Fifteen members from industry and academia participated. The meeting was supported by the IET Japan network (IET-JN), the Electronic Application Conference Group and the common area group for Architecture and Image Media.   • The IET SA & NT Network’s Annual Defence Professional Networking Event 2017

    The IET SA & NT Network’s Annual Defence Professional Networking Event was held on 14th December 2017 at the Adelaide Hilton Hotel.  The event was a big success with over 100 tickets sold and there were guests attended the event from other states in Australia.  Master of Ceremonies for the event was Chair of the IET SA/NT Local Network Rob Pitelen.   • Circus Came To Town For Xmas - Cirque Du Soliel (IET London Network).

    Known for creating magical shows, Mark Ager, CEO of Stage Technologies, talked through how the revolving stage was created for the Cirque Du Soliel's production KA. The interactions of the gantry crane was talked about how each revision allowed better fluidity to manage the revolving stage. The stage itself, known as the Sand Cliff Deck, has 80 steel pegs that shoot out when required by the performers allowing them to flip around the revolving stage to give gravity defying performances.  The stage moves in ft/seconds, uses pistons, pumps and hydraulic cylinders that when combined brings the stage to life. Almost 10 similar stages are used throughout the perfomance. With so many features to manage, the control systems too are of similar engineering design – they’d need to be given the acrobatic…

  • End Of Term One On The Ottawa LN BBC Micro:bit Project

    The Ottawa LN sponsored three high school teachers with 80 micro:bits each.  Yesterday I was invited to an end-of-term session with one of them, and quite the event it turned out to be! The high-school teacher, with his class of 15 or so 1`4-year olds, had joined forces with a junior school class of about 30 9-10 year olds.  The session yesterday was an innovative combination of the two classes, with the students from the high school mentoring their juniors.  A glance at the photos will give the flavour.  The combined class spent over two hours producing a Christmas-themed gift to take home for each junior child.  Some made tree decorations with Micro:bit stars, others made wrist watches that told the time (more or less), one enterprising pair made a messaging system camouflaged as smart phones…

  • South Yorkshire Young Professional DRAX Visit Nov. 2017.

    Back in November 26 of our local Young Professionals went on a site visit to the DRAX Power station, in Selby, North Yorkshire.  During the visit they learnt that DRAX now uses USA imported biomass, over coal, as it is cleaner, especially being a waste product of the logging industry. They were also reassured of how DRAX could provide electricity should they be without their main generators, got a detailed breakdown of how the main generators worked.  As well as a very formative tour of the vast site, which saw our YP's enjoying the views from 'oversized golf carts', they also got to visit the main building which showed the vast array of control units, each generator needing its own control station.  If you attended this event, please drop us a few comments below, we would love to hear from…

  • University Teams Pass The Chequered Flag!

    Congratulations to the Nova Racing team  at Delft Technical University who won the MotoE Racing championship this year in only their second year of competing and the Bath University Zero team who were runners up.  MotoE  is an official European Championship for electric motorcycle racers, teams from the across the globe, battle each other in five rounds within Europe for the privilege to call themselves the MotoE European Cup Champions.   It has been supported by the IET Automotive & Road Transport Systems TPN for several years as it raises awareness of electric motorcycles and the profile of the IET and TPN.  Also, all members of the Technical Panel are IET members.   • Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Visit

    The Trelleborg Corporation in El Segundo designs and manufactures high precision seals for the aerospace and automotive industry and a small group of IET members and guests were fortunate enough to get a tour of this facility. With much of the tooling and manufacturing being carried out by technicians with a lifetimes experience on the tools it was inspiring to see what can still be done with minimal automation. The products manufactured on site are used in aircraft systems such as landing gear, hydraulic units and other subsystems which have rotating or reciprocating elements using working fluids or lubricants ranging from 7XX series passenger aircraft through to 4th and 5th generation fighter aircraft.   • Project Controls Expo 2017

    Project Controls EXPO delivered its 7th industry event on 16 November 2017. It’s objective is to provide significant practical and theoretical awareness on Project Controls process, tools and techniques to its delegates. This show is for those working or have an interest within the complete spectrum of Projects Controls, and is held annually at the Emirates Arsenal stadium in London.   There were seminars from a wide range of industries with 43 speakers, also showcased were some of the latest technology tools and providers. The whole event provides a great opportunity to network with other professionals, and the sharing of practical experience and expertise creates the great atmosphere experienced at Expo.   • IET Brunei Technical Visit To A Fish Farm

    Saturday, 9 th December 2017. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei conducted a technical visit to a fish farm at Syarikat Hajah Rosni Binti Haji Kassim dan Anak-Anak located at the vicinity of Kaingaran Island near Kampong Pengkalan Sibabau.  A total of 14 members and 8 non members joined the visit. The group were welcomed and briefed by the owner of the fish farm, Awang Haji Bakar bin Haji Chuchu. The business operates 117 fish cages over a one-hectare area. Fishes farmed here include sea bass, grouper, red snapper, yellow-spotted trevally and green mussels. Last year, the company produced 13 metric-tonnes of barramundi, grouper, and other types of fish, as well as green clams for the local market.   The aim of the visit was to give the IET members and non-members an…

    At the start of the year I chose the theme of field based technologies. In search for next year’s theme, I attended the Megatrends evening hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Amidst an extremely international crowd, technology trends were discussed by Dr Jason Blackstock, Snr. Lecturer in Science and Global Affairs at University College London and Neil Gray, Founder and CEO of Whirli. Whilst technology trends were reviewed, of interest was the mention of 4.0 Trends. Common themes such as shared economy Vs traditional ones were talked about – where Generation X won’t be waiting for that grandfather clock, but those that will, should be looking to better manage their own perceptions of what defines reality.     Charles Carpenter is a Senior Technology Offier at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Center (NAMRC) based at Sheffield University.  NAMRC with 80 Engineers and Operators undertakes research into manufacturing processes and helps the manufacturers of nuclear technology to manufacture reactors in an efficient and  a cost effective way.  They have and are developing processes in collaboration with TWI and several other Institutes.  Charles has a MSc in Mechanical Engineering and has previously worked in Aerospace and manufacturing companies.  He presented on Small Modular Nuclear Reactors at CUED on 7/12/17. Despite media reports about  a lack of UK expertise in the nuclear field, the UK contributes around 60% of the effort towards delivering up to 19GW of new nuclear power capacity in the UK…

We cover the design, implementation, construction, development, analysis and understanding of control systems, in all their varied forms. Our network consists of Community Members, Executive Committee (Exec) and Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). The Exec are volunteers who give their time to work with IET staff to coordinate the activities of the community and to organise events and awards.     We are seeking a volunteer member to operate/administer/webmaster our page of the IET web site and also deal with any enquiries raised by their local 'Engineering Community' network. This is not an onerous task, and can be performed at home or in the workplace. The successful candidate need not necessarily attend the P&H committee meetings (which, incidentally, are held at Stilton three times per year) - it's just customer feedback that is needed. Involvement can be as little or as much as the member would like - it's up to you!. Content on publishable articles would be provided by the P&H committee members via email, and the technical set-up and support would be provided by Julie Hudson at IET HQ.   • Visit to Perkins Engines

    The Peterborough and Huntingdon Local Network initiated a visit on 12 September to Perkins Engines Company Limited (part of the multinational Caterpillar Inc since 1998).  Our contact at the destination happened to be a member of the IMechE and the chairman of the Peterborough Joint Panel.  The PJP is a collaboration of IET, IMechE and the Peterborough Young Engineers, so the visit was opened to those on the circulation lists for all the organisations, one of whom had travelled over 100 miles!  It is then not surprising that it was oversubscribed, above the 40 limit that had to be set.    We were welcomed by our hosts and, following an excellent buffet lunch, were given an introductory talk about Caterpillar and its principal Cat and Perkins products and services.  The Peterborough site manufactures…
