  • Regional IMechE Dinner 22nd March 2019

    IET SYLN were once again invited to the IMechE  Regional dinner held at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield Attending on behalf of the IET SYLN were the Immediate Past Chair, Alan Chater and the Young Professionals Chair, Layla Graham Around 170 invited guests enjoyed the evening with Denis Healy their Regional  Business Development Manager once again undertaking the Master of Ceremonies role for the evening Key note speakers were Tony Roche the current IMechE President, the Master Cutler Nick Cragg and the Regional Chairman Alan Bratton. The event this year was organised by Elevation Recruitment from the Rotherham based office.   • Get Up To Speed (GUTS) Event 27th MARCH 2019

    Another very successful event set up by Work-Wise and supported this year by over 90 exhibitors. Staged at the MAGNA Science & Adventure Centre in Rotherham again provides an excellent venue for this popular event attended by over 3000. Many schools in the SY region and beyond attend, making this a fantastic opportunity for schoolchildren to see first hand what Engineering and Manufacturing opportunities are out there. IET SYLN once again had a double stand and were able to exhibit a number of interesting activities alongside the opportunity to distribute a range of literature about the benefits of membership of the Institution and engineering in general.   • IET Trinidad and Tobago LN assists the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in achieving Accreditation programmes 2019

    It is with great pleasure to report that after the visit and discourses presented by the IET TT LN Executives ( Chairman David Drakes and Treasurer, Anthony Chadee) to the students and faculty members of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), the IET Panel has recommended that the UTT  programmes receive 5-year accreditation status.   The programmes presented for accreditation were: ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Mechanical Option ·          B.A.Sc . Utilities Engineering, Electrical Option ·          NETD Electrical/Electronic Engineering  ·          NETD Instrumentation Technician The IET Panel was extremely impressed with the quality of the programmes and hence will be recommending that the accreditation of  UTT programmes be backdated by 3 or 5 years.   • VISIT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO (UTT)

    On March 20 th , The Chairman, David and Treasurer visited the UTT, Point Lisas Campus, at the invitation of Dr. Curtis Boodoo, who,  requested that  the IET LN  assist with the formation of an On Campus Network at the UTT. On this visit, presentations were made to both students and members of the UTT faculty outlining a brief overview of the IET and its many benefits. They spoke in particular about the formation of the On Campus Network, and the office holders required for the formation of the Network.   Eng. Anthony spoke about the importance of professional registration, and the benefits it brings to those on whom registered status is conferred.   • Speaker Highlight - Dr Shane Lowe, Vitrue Health. The 5th Future Of Medicine – The Role Of Doctors In 2029

    Our next speaker highlight for the 5th Future of Medicine - The Role of Doctors in 2029 is Dr Shane Lowe from Vitrue Health .  Vitrue Health, providing quantitative motor function assessment technology for musculoskeletal healthcare   Shane Lowe is the CEO of Vitrue Health . His background is in biomedical electronics and PhD is in predicting degradations in the health of older adults based on activity patterns and motor function capacity. He spent several years developing motion capture devices for Vicon Motion Systems and has worked on multiple medical technologies. His current focus is developing and spreading Vitrue's products across healthcare particularly in Orthopaedic settings Register now to attend.

    Mike Henry, BEng CEng MIET CMgr MCMI Chair, IET Singapore Network  Mike Henry is a Project Engineering Manager for Wood in Singapore, concentrating in the oil and gas engineering sector. He has lived and worked in Singapore since 2009, but spent 2 years overseas working on assignment in Vietnam and has recently returned to Singapore.     We're now launching the IET's annual photography competition for 2019 in a bid to challenge the stereotypical image of hard hats and dirty overalls often associated with engineering and instead showcase modern engineering.Open to any photograph of an engineering-related subject that captures the creative, exciting and modern face of engineering and engineers today, the competition is split into two age groups – under 16 and 17 and over – with five categories to enter.  Design & Production Digital Environment & Energy Structures Transport Judges include Gadget Show host Georgie Barrat, Editor of Amateur Photographer magazine Nigel Atherton, E&T magazine Picture Editor Gillian Abbott and Vice-Chair of the IET Young Professionals Communities Committee (YPCC).   • 2019 Bio-Buddy Event, Held At University Of Ottawa

    The IET Local Network sponsored, and helped judge the first Bio-Buddy design competition which was held as part of the University of Ottawa Design DayOn a sunny but cool Friday morning three teams of undergraduates from Ottawa University presented their Design Reports and Entries for the first Bio-Buddy event. Each team signed up to design and prototype a semi realistic infant child mannequin, under the age of 12 months, that is intended to improve CPR training by providing a more realistic experience for CPR training courses attendees. The competition was framed by a detailed specification and a set of evaluation criteria. Each team prepared a Design Report that was circulated to the judges in advance and was one of the elements that was being evaluated. The next step was for the teams to…

  • IET-PBOC Charity Event 2019

    Friday, 5th April 2019, Kuala Belait - IET Politeknik Brunei On Campus (IET-PBOC) organised a charity event for special needs students at Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Kuala Belait.The event is conducted to give opportunity for volunteers, consisted of students from Politeknik Brunei and Universiti Teknologi Brunei, to contribute to the society. Simultaneously, the volunteers were given first hand experience to interact with special needs students and formed friendship bonds with them. The charity event began with the welcoming speech by Pusat Ehsan staffs followed by activities to enhance the creativity of Pusat Ehsan students such as Cupcake Decoration, Hand Painting and Indoor Gardening. At the end of the activity, gifts are presented by IET-PBOC to Pusat Ehsan students.

  • Friction, Lubrication And Wear (FLW) Or Tribology As We Know It!

    (FLW) as an acronym is easy to remember, which certainly helped me when I first started looking after the IET’s Tribology Network last year and was getting to grips with what the subject encompassed.   A year has passed and I’ve come to appreciate that there is so much more to Tribology and how it has many applications across a wide range of sectors.  We recently held our two day conference in Birmingham at IET Austin Court where we welcomed a good mix of industry, academia and student delegates to the event.    This year we were pleased to have so many poster submissions, as we managed to double the numbers from the 2018 event and had 19 presenters over the two days.   Day One poster competition was won by Bjoern Kunzelmann from Imperial College London with his poster on ‘Experimental and…

    The Berkshire Local Network PATW competition was held at UTC Reading on 21 st March 2019, but you could be forgiven for thinking that you had come to an Institution of Civil Engineers’ meeting, as three of the four presenters talked about civil engineering related subjects.   The first speaker, Samuel Hyginus, an electrical engineer who works for Peter Brett Associates, spoke about recruitment in the construction industry, and his enthusiasm for the industry was clear, particularly in the question and answers session.   • KTJ OXBRIDGE ENGINEERING WORKSHOP

    20190310 On 10th March 2019, IET YPS Malaysia Network had collaborated and organized a STEM based workshop with 100 energetic and creative Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar (KTJ) International School secondary school students. The workshop has been specifically designed to give students the opportunity to research, design, develop and presents their creative solution to genuinely tough engineering problems. The students have to perform their ability to allocate workforce, resources and time. Students were given the challenge to create a working scale model prototype to manage the traffic beside construction site with the use of BBC micro:bit and design materials for a crane prototype.
