    Award for Outstanding Contribution This award is to be given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution, over a number of years, to the operation of the IET Sussex Local Network. This contribution may be in any of the recognised activities of the Sussex Local Network. Nominations can be made at any time by any member of the IET Sussex Local Network. The form of the nomination should be a document of no more than 500 words and may include illustrations as needed. Nominations shall be sent to the Secretary of the IET Sussex Local Network.   • Personification; Collect Data, Listen & Respond.

    Sonification. When a fire test occurs in a building - the alarms are loud, people respond without chaos, wardens know what vested jackets to wear and where to stand to group the work force as they exit the building. Similarly, If a system existed that could perform sonification on the activities of a SOC using big data techniques ( SAS or Hadoop ), then it would allow any SOC to be almost living and breathing. So, alerts at ISO layer 7 combined with alerts at ISO Layer 2 would have a different sound level, so you know exactly which product you need to zoom into during the first steps of the triage process. Sounds that expresses different comfort levels during a compromise could support cyber alerting mechanisms in place. Perhaps a feature of a SIEM tool or perhaps to complement building security…

    The start of the new IET 2016-17 session and time to look forward.  The Radar, Sonar and Navigation TPN have been dormant for a little while, but we are now looking to rebuild this and need your help. With the help of a few key individuals (I won’t single you out Darren, Ediz, Mik and James) but with their input we have managed to get a few ideas to float and now are ready to go to the next level -  supersonic (forgive the sonar pun).  This international group is the home of an extensive community of scientists and engineers with an interest in all aspects of radar, sonar and navigation systems.   We want to keep the international link, so are looking for interested scientists and engineers to join the RS&N Executive Committee, helping to shape the direction and priorities of the network.     Professor Noel Sharkey is Emeritus professor of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, University of Sheffield, Chair of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control and co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, as well as Head Judge of BBC Robot Wars and an IET Fellow.   • Best Robot Wars Role Model Award - Launched by Professor Noel Sharkey

    Noel Sharkey is an IET Fellow, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Public Engagement University of Sheffield. He is Chair elect of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control and an advocate at the UN. Noel is a principle spokesperson for a large international coalition of NGOs: the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. He is also co-director of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics which concretizes ethical issues in robotics. But Noel is best known to the public as head judge in every series of BBC’s Robot Wars.
