  • Regional PATW and CCAP meeting

    It was indeed an experience for all Regional Present Around the World (PATW) delegates and CCAP members when they were in Hong Kong for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Regional PATW competition. Every year IET organises PATW competition to encourage participants to develop and showcase their presentation skills. As usual, we have many talented young participants competing to represent Asia Pacific in the Global Final in London. This year winner was Padmanabhan Krishnamurthy from HK and 1st runner up was Sharma Ankur from Singapore.  Congratulations  to the winners and well done to everyone who joined.   The Regional PATW will not be a success without the support of volunteers from IET HK local network (LN).   • IET-UTBOC Membership Drive 2019

    Saturday, 24th August 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan - On the 24th of August 2019, an IET membership drive was held in UTB with an approximate of 30 students in attendance. Various of courses were seen from the faculty of engineering such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechatronic engineering as well as those from the faculty of computing and informatics. An introduction of IET UTB On Campus had been done by UTBOC chairperson, Ng Jia Ying followed by another talk from Lieutenant Colonel (U) Schufin bin Haji Brahim, BEng (Hons), MPM, MIET, Honorary Chairman IET Brunei Darussalam Local Network 2017/2019. At the end of the membership drive, everyone was given refreshments and had a further catch up and Q&A session with the IET UTB on Campus committee.

  • Ethics In Autonomous Vehicles -more Than Just The Trolley Problem

    Earlier in the summer the ARTS TPN organised a daytime seminar on Ethics in Autonomous Vehicles, which attracted over 60 delegates.  In the morning we had presentations from Professor Tom Sorell, University of Warwick, Reverend Dr Mark Bratton, Bishop of Coventry's Adviser on Medical Ethics, Lucy Yu, Five AI and Alex Bevan, Oxbotica.   In the afternoon Ben Gilburt, Sopra Steria, Zeina Nazer, University of Southampton, Dr Shaun Helman, TRL and Dr Jason Nurse, University of Kent led some moderated discussion sessions.   • UK Space Students All Set For Washington

    Earlier in the summer, the IET Satellite TPN were pleased to link up with the British Interplanetary Society, Space Universities Network (SUN) and UKSEDS for the UK heat of the IAF Space Students competition.A total of six under/post graduates competed for the two prizes which were won by Undergraduate - Eleonor Frost - University College London -  Investigating the Feasibility and Design of a Microgravity Surgical Workstation  and Postgraduate - Thomas Cheyney - Northumbria University - In the Interest of All Countries - Ensuring Equitable Access to Space Resources You can read this write-up  courtesy of Stuart Eves from the BIS,  which gives more details about the event and the finalists.     Mr. Pradesh Boodoosingh a student from UTT, PT. Lisas Campus  won the IET Trinidad and Tobago Local Network, Present Around the World competition held at UWI on Sat May 25, 2019. The topic he presented on was ‘ Programming Artifical Neural Networks to simulate a human ethical consciousness to make decisions’ . Pradesh's  prize was a free all expense paid trip to enter the  next leg of the  competition, the  IET PATW North American Finals in San Diego, USA to compete with  6 other winners of their respective   universities/engineering groups in Canada and the USA. Pradesh was the first runner up in this prestigious competition and received the  highest marks for speaking style, crowd engagement and overall PowerPoint presentation quality with animations and design.   • RIAT 2019 And Our Surprise Visitor

    The volunteers from the IET Aerospace and Satellite Technical Professional Networks were pleased to be invited by the IET Swindon Local Network to join them on their stand once again, which was one of the largest in the Techno Zone this year.The atrocious weather on the Friday, which led to most of the flying programme being cancelled, worked in our favour by generating lots of visitors to the stand.  We were especially delighted to have a surprise visit by Tim Peake, the astronaut.  Whilst on our stand, Tim was kind enough to try some of our activities including the gliding simulator, meet the volunteers and pose for lots of photos.   I thought this year the variety of activities/literature on the stand was excellent and catered for a wide range of visitors at different stages of their careers…

    For the fifth year in a row, Engineering Open House Day saw children and their parents go behind the scenes of well-known engineering and technology brands, as 64 companies got involved with 53 events taking place up and down the country.Companies such as Amazon, The National Theatre, Ofcom, Royal Mail and BBC Birmingham opened their doors to showcase the huge variety of engineering and technology roles within. The events demonstrated the plethora of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers available. The successful events follow new IET research, which shows nearly a quarter (24%) of parents say their children have expressed an interest in engineering as a future career.     There’s still time to enter the IET’s photography competition!The IET’s annual photography competition for 2019 launched earlier this year in a bid to challenge public misconceptions of engineering and technology and dispel its traditional image of hard hats and dirty overalls.     On the 29th July 2019 the local Joint PEI Committee successfully arranged a visit to the IMG Boeing Factory 2050 site based on the Sheffield Business Park which is located on the outskirts of Rotherham.This is a very high tech, leading edge, Manufacturing Research facility which explores many new Manufacturing Techniques using Robotics, AI, AR & VR.
