This is a question full of engineering, medical, and social issues all intertwined. Teachers find it easier to teach the facts and figures in science and math than to explore the debate that comes with it. Josh Doyle from Gallomanor Communiciations Ltd is preparing a Space Debate Kit, the 11th in their series of kits, which will provide everything teachers need to get their students discussing the issues behind sending humans to Mars. Previous kits can be found here: http://debate.imascientist.org.uk/ . The kit will follow a tried and tested format, based on character cards and lesson notes. It will include 8 debate cards outlining the opinions of different fictional characters with an interest in human space flight, and teacher notes to help carry the lesson effectively. Earth’s relationship with the Moon has changed significantly since our first foray to its surface. The moon went from being the ultimate goal of the 60s space race to being overshadowed by the prospect of deeper space exploration . Today the Moon is as important as ever, it is back in the news as an integral part of future space travel. The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced a plan to 3D print a lunar village in the 2020’s. This is planned to be a permanent fixture that will replace the International Space Station (ISS). If all goes to plan then this will be the first permanent settlement for humans in space. The IET’s Board of Trustees, supported by Council, has put forward resolutions to strengthen the IET’s leadership and governance, and to improve the way in which Council operates, so that it is better placed to meet the needs of its members in future. NASA has been dominating the news lately with their recent developments in electric aircraft technology. From the battery powered plane with 10 engines ‘Greased lightning (GL-10) to their LEAPTech project, we are seeing a lot of innovation that could bring us closer to the first commercial electric aircraft. The developments being made in green technology by NASA are expected to help further the commercial aerospace industry and make a $250 billion saving. The “ Routes into Rail: What I Have Always Wanted ” video won first prize in the corporate films category at the 21st Festival International CinéRail on Thursday 17 December 2015 at the UIC in Paris. The video faced stiff competition from across Europe and the recognition comes after yet another successful year of Routes into Rail activities, which are aimed at encouraging more young people to choose a career in rail.

As the UK gears up to open two leading-edge proton therapy centres in 2018, Professor Carsten P. Welsch, University of Liverpool’s Department of Physics, based at the Cockcroft Institute says there is a need for more researchers in this exciting field of accelerator science. He says: “Particle-beam therapy is still very much in evolution and more work is needed to design and optimise the treatment facilities and beam delivery systems.” To address this shortage he is coordinating a new European training network Optimization of Medical Accelerators (OMA), which is currently recruiting fellows to work in this exciting field of accelerator science. PRESTIGE LECTURE. DIAMOND LIGHT SOURCE. Thursday 25 February 2016 at 1830 hrs, Churchill College. Professor Andrew Harrison will present on the Diamond Light Source which is the UK’s synchrotron, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines, materials to viruses, vaccines and chemicals. A joint venture between the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Welcome Trust, the synchrotron is used by over 7000 researchers. On 7 December 2015, nearly 500, Year 11, 12 and 13 students attended a Maths Inspiration Event sponsored by the IET, I Mech E and ICE. For two hours, in the West Road Cambridge Concert Hall, the students participated in maths puzzles, listened to maths and physics talks and learnt how to produce animated films using maths and computers. The speakers were excellent and had the students fully engaged. Hugh Hunt from the Cambridge University Engineering Department gave a fascinating expose of angular motion and gyroscopes getting students onto the stage to take part in experiments and demonstrations. This year’s lecture was delivered by Professor Danielle George from Manchester University. The Lecture was titled “Engineered in Your Imagination” and was a development of her 2014 Royal Institution Lecture which she delivered on BBC4 over three nights in December 2014. Danielle delivered her lecture to enthralled audiences in the Great Hall in Manchester University’s Sackville St building, and also at Loreto Sixth Form College, Her exciting demonstrations involved glassless Light bulbs immersed in Liquid Nitrogen, 3D video images utilising Raspberry Pi computers showing leaping audience volunteers suspended in the air, and audience volunteers undertaking Visual Reality Big Dipper rides whilst carrying trays of Champagne glasses . In case there's any confusion, the last SGM was to acertain if the membership wanted to progress with the new governance structure, or come up with a different new one. This was brought about my a number of members who felt that G4F was not the right way to go, but that a change still needed to be made. The outcome of that SGM was made to continue down the G4F track. And we are now at the second SGM, where the membership needs to vote on whether or not to implement G4F. The resolutions you will be voting on are changes to the by-laws and regulations of the IET. Please make the time to vote, it is important that the outcome reflects what the membership actually wants. If you have any…

It is easy to recognise training courses and seminars that you have attended as learning opportunities, and course outlines often come with predetermined learning outcomes or objectives which can help you to shape your reflection on the training and how it has affected your practice.
