  • Cross-Border Air Traffic Control Trial Cuts Holding Times At Heathrow

    A trial led by NATS as part of the UK-Ireland FAB and in collaboration with FA and Heathrow Airport, to cut the amount of time aircraft spend circling in 'holding stacks' at Heathrow has started to reap rewards. Since April 2014, NATS has recorded a reduction of up to a minute in holding times for those flights under the trial, saving airlines £1million in fueld and 5,000 tonnes of CO2, in addition to reducing noise levels for those communities under the stacks.   • Forthcoming Aerospace Event - Key Technologies For Next Generation Aircraft

    Keep a lookout for further details of a joint conference that the Aerospace TPN and Singapore Local Network are collaborating on which will be held in Singapore on 9-10 March 2015. The conference covering Key Technologies for Next Generation Aircraft will look at three main topic areas: Electric Generation and Usage on More Electric Aircraft Big Data Usage for more cost-effective operation Advances in Materials, Manufacturing and non-destructive testing solutions for Aerospace applications. The programme and other details for the event are currently being finalised and will be publicised soon.

  • Toyota Open up Hydrogen Patents

    Toyota is following the example made by Tesla in 2014, by freely sharing nearly 6,000 patents it owns which cover hydrogen fuel cell technology. The announcement came after its showcase of the Miraj hydrogen driven car at CES 2015 in Las Vegas. The portfolio of patents covers fuel cell stacks, high pressure hydrogen talks, software control systems and industrial processes in generating/supplying the gas.   • Hack Targets Industrial Plant Causing Massive Damage

    Sophisticated hack causes massive damage to steelworks The most significant hack since Stuxnet targeted Iran’s uranium enrichment programme in 2010 caused massive damage to a German steelworks, according to a report published this week by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Whilst the Sony hack caused the release of film star emails, a Bond film script and cancellation of film screenings, grabbing media attention, the significance of deliberate physical damage caused by sophisticated network intrusion has passed largely unnoticed (in mainstream media). This is probably the only publicly known incident where physical damage to a plant has been deliberately caused by malware since Stuxnet.     On Friday 19th December, representatives of BG Trinidad & Tobago, Jonathan Kacal, Christopher Downes and Jason Look Yee, were keen to discuss and develop plans for an upcoming seminar to introduce the IET, the Local Network and the routes to professional registration with their engineers and technicians. Both myself and Gerald Mendes, represented our network in this informal meeting to understand the specific needs of the BG T&T group and provide key insights into the specific activities and avenues that the LN and the IET can proviide the oil and gas company.
