  • Guidance on Producing an ISA Plan

    The ISA Working Group, a collaborative group working under the IET, IMechE, BCS and SaRS, has produced new guidance on planning the assessment of a safety case or similar safety assessment document. The new material supports the groups previous guidance on procurement of  Independent Safety Assurance  services, and is intended to be used by anyone who needs to make a judgement on the adequacy of a safety case, whether independently or otherwise.   • Meet The Woman Who Launched A New Field Of Scientific Study

    As a female chemical engineer, Frances Arnold was already a rarity. After all, only about 16 percent of chemical engineers are women. But now that she has become the first woman ever to win the prestigious Millennium Technology Prize — it was awarded in Helsinki, Finland, on May 24 — Arnold is truly one of a kind. And she knows that in addition to a big cash award (1 million euros, or about $1.3 million), the prize brings an opportunity to spotlight the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers and to be a role model for other women.   • IET Gloucestershire Network celebrates local apprentice achievement with GET

    An impressive range of apprentice skills and achievements were celebrated with the support of the Gloucestershire Local Network recently at the Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET) Presentation Evening. Held at Cheltenham Ladies College on Friday 5 th August, apprentices from a variety of courses were joined by family and local dignitaries to celebrate their achievements on their respective engineering and technology programmes. The audience also heard from Lucy Ackland, who won the WES prize at the IET’s Young Woman Engineer Award in 2014, who told of her journey to becoming an engineer – including how her maths teacher told her to go straight to university rather than apply for an apprenticeship. Lucy joined Renishaw as an apprentice at 16 before being awarded a 1 st class honours degree…

  • IET Northumbria Retired Members Section - Activities And Programme Of Events

    The IET Northumbria Network , Retired Members Section - 'Continuing with Engineering and Life after Retirement' The new session will start next month and we have a full programme of events for our members. These are usually held at Westerhope Methodist Church Hall and are accompanied by a buffet lunch. Starting time is noon, followed by the lecture from about 13:15. Most events are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month and members, partners and guests are all welcome. Why not come along and see what we do?   • Airlander 10 Completes Successful Test Flight

    Its excellent to see that the Hybrid Air Vehicles, Airlander 10 airship has just completed a successful test flight from its hanger at Cardington Airfield.  The airship is the world's longest aircraft and during its test flight flew up to 500 feet and reached speeds of around 35 knots. I've flown on many different types of aircraft and on my list of aircraft that I'd like to fly in is an airship, so hopefully in time HAV will be able to secure investment to develop a passenger model.   Whats your thoughts, would you like to see passenger airships make a return to the skies and if so would you be prepared to fly in one?     A number of incidents at European ports have significantly raised the profile of cyber security and the risks associated with the complex systems used by port owners and operators. To help senior port personnel address this emerging security issue the Institution of Engineering and Technology (the IET) have worked in close association with the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to produce this new code of practice.   • SpaceX Production Facility Tour

    SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft, it’s business model is based on the premise that the costs of putting people and satellites in space can be significantly reduced if the rockets can be reused. This is because the majority of launch costs come from building the rocket (the fuel is only a small proportion of the costs of launch) so by reusing the first stage rocket, in the same way that commercial airliners make multiple flights the capital costs of rocket design and manufacture can be ‘repaid’ over multiple launches. To achieve this, SpaceX rockets are designed not only to withstand reentry, but also to return to the launch pad or ocean landing site for a vertical landing. Ian Naylor Chairman Ian joined Threepwood in July 2015 as a Principal Consultant and he is a Chartered Electrical Engineer.     Watch Mhairi Galloway explain how our IETDiamond scholarship has helped her at university.  Diamond Jubilee Scholarships were awarded for the first time in 2013 and Mhairi started studying at University of Glasgow. Scholarship winners will each receive an IET Scholarship of at least £1,000 per year, for up to three years for Bachelors students and four years for MEng students. Winners will also receive free membership of the IET for the duration of their course, if not already received as an IET Academic Partner with their University. Approximately 100 Scholarships will be available in 2016. Scholarship winners are expected to be ambassadors for the IET and engineering.
