  • [IET-USM OC]:181020 Faraday Challenge (Penang)

    IET-USM OC has carried out the Faraday Challenge on the 20th of October 2018 . Our theme for this year was – Coding the Future. The purpose of this event is to instil interest of STEM related fields among high school students in addition to their daily learning in schools. The event was endorsed by the Education Department of Penang State and had managed to attract 52 students, separated into 9 groups, from all over Penang. The event was kicked off with welcoming remarks by Mr. Cheng Wei Han, President of IET-USM OC. In our version of Faraday Challenge, each team was given a BBC micro:bit to code for any real-time applications. In addition, we also provided every team with an equal number of virtual coins (Faraday Points) which could be used to exchange additional equipment or devices to develop…

    IET YPS Malaysia Network had organized their annual team building event entitled "IET YPS Leadership Camp 2018/2019 " on 5th to 6th January 2018 at Carpe Diem Orchard Home Serendah.   A team building event with IET YPS Malaysia, IET Malaysia Local Network, IET Communities Committee Asia Pacific (CC-AP), IET YPS Singapore, IET YPS Brunei, IET YMS Hong Kong, IEM Young Engineers Section (YES), Monash Engineers Australia Monash Sunway Student Section, and not forgetting our beloved On Campus groups from all over the country, UTAR, UNITEN, UCSI, Swinburne, UoSM, Heriott Watt, Taylor's, USM, MMU Cyberjaya, MAHSA, TARUC and UiTM.   • “Being An Engineering Technician Helped In My Job Interview”

    Earlier this year manufacturing engineer Frida Nzaba moved into a role at Rolls-Royce repairing jet engines – and she’s convinced that being an Engineering Technician (EngTech) helped her to get the job.Frida is now a Repair Capability Manufacturing Engineer at Rolls-Royce Engine Overhaul Services, based in Derby. Her working day is spent developing and implementing ways to repair jet engine components. “The main thing I enjoy is the fact that I can go into work and see various jet engines being stripped and assembled ready to dispatch to the customer; this is just mind blowing,” she says. Frida’s typical day involves the technical and interpersonal aspects of undertaking a repair, and she admits she loves the combination. “What excites me about my job is being able to identify a problem or…

    We’re delighted that several of our Fellows and Members have been recognised in the 2019 Queen’s New Year Honours listing. Michelle Richmond FIET, Professor Hugh Griffiths FIET, Juergen Maier FIET, David Hughes FIET and Roger Medwell MIET were among those to receive honours. Michelle Richmond Michelle, our Director of Membership and Professional Development, has received an MBE for her work as an ambassador for women in engineering, for spearheading initiatives encouraging young people into STEM careers and for setting engineering standards. A 1990 winner of our Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award, Michelle started working for the IET in 2006.   • Congratulations Muhammad Rashid - Recipient Of IET Brunei LN Best Student Award 2018

    Congratulations to Muhammad Rashid.Rashid who was awarded the IET Brunei LN best student award for his outstanding performance during his studies at Politeknik Brunei. He was the top graduating student within the Electrical and Electronics Engineering programmes. Rashid is also a key person in the development of an energy efficient car build which was used for the Shell Eco Marathon competition in Singapore. Shell Eco-marathon is a competition for students who are passionate about developing innovative mobility solutions. It challenges engineering, design, science and technology students to design, build and drive the world’s most energy-efficient vehicle.     On the 23rd of November, the IET Young Professionals of Western Australia set sail on their end-of-year "Welcome Aboard Networking Cruise". The cruise brought together members of the senior committee, industry professionals, young professionals, and engineering students for a night to celebrate the IET WA community’s achievements over the past two years. It also offered the students and young professionals a chance to network with senior engineers and members of the IET community. The cruise began with light refreshments, drinks and a memorable speech from Martin King which encouraged everyone to get into the ‘pirate’ theme of the night and cheer every time someone mentioned a pirate or boat reference.     The theme for this year’s blog was field based devices, and throughout the year all the seminars, lectures and events attended has had an embedded trend towards smart enablement - beyond just smart device integration. We are starting to see the foundations of industry 4.0 shaping not only industries, but now digital economies too, block chain technology is now being built into most ecosystems as standard making the Industry 4.0 journey more acceptable. 2019 will more than likely continue the trend of industry 4.0 and how all our smart devices will integrate our day to day lives into new ecosystems.     Neil Johnston, CEO & Founder of Vector Suite demonstrated, at the University of Surrey, how using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) initial design concepts are now being created in half the time. He showed how in minutes, using VR & VR headsets and controllers, he could create a brand new car design not only from the outside (2D) but also using VR he could sit inside the car and design its interior too. The platform demonstrated allows you to draw in 2D and 3D in real time - he described it like ' laying down wires in space ' as he created the car's body.  Speaking with Neil, I asked him his thoughts on how AR and VR might be impacted by Cyber Security, we discussed how security by design will become as important as innovation itself.
