    Dr Hao Li, Director of Vision and Graphics Lab, Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) at the University of Southern California (USC) and Dr Sarah Atkinson Senior Lecturer in Digital Cultures, Head of the Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries, King’s College London gave a futuristic IET EngTalks inspired by Sir Edward Appleton.Dr Li spoke of how it is possible to superimpose human movements into a 3D Avatar with AI enhancements. So for example, his beta research technology lets you take a simple photo on your smart device and from that, you can automatically generate a full 3D rendering - all using everyday technology. He mentioned during Q&A that as the AI software gets device friendly, more and more user devices will take advantage of edge computing to process the AI images…

  • IUOC SITE VISIT TO BUTRA HEIDELBERG CEMENT SDN BHD - 17TH SEPTEMBER 2018

    Monday, 17th September 2018, Muara - A total of 23 participants from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) visited Butra Heidelberg Cement (BHC) Sdn Bhd, Serasa on 17th September 2018.The technical visit was conducted by IET-UTB On Campus (IUOC) with the aim of allowing participants to have a better understanding and to gain in-depth knowledge of the workings of the organization. The visit started off with a safety briefing that offered guidelines for participants in case of an emergency and stressed the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the plant. This was followed by corporate and technical presentations detailing the cement processing steps in the plant. Just some of the statistics that were mentioned by Safia Qureshi, Founder and CEO of CupClub during her talk that gave insight into how a simple idea can completely change , or even create new ecosystems, in this case, through the daily use of coffee.With the focus to reduce single-use plastic packaging, the value add approach by CupClub to waste reduction ensures plastic is used with complete efficiency built into their ecosystem. Spam and phishing has increased over the years to the extent that now nearly 90% of email traffic is spam. Internet domain owners (such as Gmail, Yahoo etc.) and the domains sending emails have implemented stricter checks to detect fraudsters and block spam and phishing emails from entering inboxes. Because of these stricter checks, emails sent via forwarding services such as our email alias fail the spam checks, as the checks see the IET as the sender of the email rather than the original sender, resulting…

  • 2018 Americas Regional PATW Winner Announced

    Communities Committee Americas (CCA) is delighted to announce Mohamed Abdelazez as this year’s Americas PATW regional final winner, with Stephanie Bonvicini taking the runner-up prize. Competitors travelled to Ottawa, ON, from across the region for the final which was organised by the IET’s Ottawa Local Network. Described as the “closest PATW final to judge in recent years”, the competition brought together six finalists from Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, and Trinidad & Tobago; as well as the IET’s first ever PATW online competition winner, Nabeel Mehdi who is based in America.   Winner Mohamed, a PhD student and a Vanier Scholar in the department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, delivered his winning presentation on The Future of Person Identification…

  • A Sussex Railway Pioneer

    During August we had the delight (and exhaustion) of having our Daughter and two Grandchildren from California stay with us for three weeks. During their stay they rode on quite a number of trains, from the South Downs Light Railway to the Eurostar to Rotterdam to visit their cousin. Included in that list was the Volk’s Electric Railway (VER) that runs along Brighton seafront from the Palace Pier to the Marina, a distance of about one and a half kilometres. The Volk’s Electric Railway is claimed to be the oldest electric railway in the world. It is certainly still transporting people (with a high percentage of children) along the seafront, between the promenade and the beach. I did notice that a suitable shingle bank screens the day-trippers on the train from the naturists beach!   Magnus Volk…
