The Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) Chatham has the responsibility of providing training for the Army’s future engineers. Through a partnership with Greenwich University, Holdfast and Mid Kent College, the Professional Engineering Wing (PEW) of the RSME provides the training and exposure to students of the Clerk of Works Electrical courses. The course offers a Foundation Degree in Electrical Engineering Management with modules aimed at Electrical Installation design, Facilities Management, Contract Management and Project Management. The Cyprus Institute Solar Car Challenge 2018

For the 9th concecutive year The Cyprus Institute organized the Solar Car Challenge 2018, on Sunday, 24 June 2018. T he event was co-organized with the Municipality of Nicosia and the contestants offered a spectacular experience conveying the message that the environmentally friendly technology is our future for a green planet. As I work at the IET and I come from a family of IT specialists (my siblings all work in the IT industry too) I like to think that I have a pretty good grasp when it comes to most things IT related. The IET Railway Network Quiz challenged the teams knowledge of all aspects of the railway industry – in a quite demanding way! Hosted by our quiz-master Peter Sheppard, the IET Railway Network Quiz night is an annual event that takes place at Doggett’s Coat and Badge pub near Blackfriars Bridge and we supplied a free buffet which was sponsored by wsp. The quiz was an ideal event for people interested in networking with railway professionals and did not only challenge their knowledge on railway but also encouraged an enjoyable evening with peers in the industry and have some fun. Pi Wars 2019

Pi Wars is an international, challenge-based robotics competition in which teams build Raspberry Pi -controlled robots and then compete in various non-destructive challenges to earn points. The competition takes place over a single weekend and prizes and medals are awarded at the end of each day. In previous years, we've had teams from schools, families, groups of hobbyists and solo roboteers. We can take up to 76 teams over the event weekend, which takes place in Cambridge, UK . The competition is open to anyone from around the world and is run by the same team that organises the Cambridge Raspberry Jam . The IET Cyprus Network sponsored the FIRST LEGO League Jr, organised at the Frederick University on 16 June 2018. FIRST LEGO League Jr. is an exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) programme for 6-9 year olds. Each year a theme relevant to the world around them is chosen as a focus for the children’s work. The teams research the topic, displaying their ideas on a Show Me poster and they also build a motorised LEGO model. FIRST LEGO League Jr. rapidly develops teamwork, design, programming and communication skills, but the most important thing is that it is great fun and makes the children really enjoy STEM subjects.

This was one of the best attended visits recently, testifying to the interest in the operational and engineering forensic work of the AAIB. Sussex Tech: Old And New

My last post talked about some local technology, emphasising the combination of old tech and new tech to help solve a problem. I guess that like most counties, Sussex has other examples of old and new technology applied to, if not identical then similar problems. An example of this came to mind when, as part of our programme of public talks we welcomed staff from the Rampion Wind Farm. Locally we had watched from the South Downs or sea-front as 116 wind turbines were installed 13 Km offshore Worthing over a number of months and a new cable was buried, snaking its way over the Downs to a sub-station some 20 Km from the shore. V Is For Volunteering – CPD Resources (TWAVES)

The main idea behind volunteering is that you offer your time, experience and knowledge, normally without any reward/pay. However, it may not be so obvious that you can actually benefit from undertaking volunteering activities yourself and although you are supposed to help and guide others you may develop your own skills. How?One would argue that by explaining ideas to others we can understand things better ourselves. It is also about interacting, communicating, leading others and working in a group. It may really help, especially if we are normally very shy or we don’t know how to approach others. What is more, volunteering looks good on our CV as it means that we are willing to make an additional effort without expecting an official reward/pay. It may also mean that we are good at time management…
