  • A Tour Of The World’s First And Brightest Hard X-ray Laser

A Tour Of The World’s First And Brightest Hard X-ray Laser

On Wednesday June 22nd, IET NorCal members and guests had a fantastic tour of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Linac Coherent Light Source ( LCLS ). The group was given an initial 40 minute presentation by Dr Mike Dunne describing the history of SLAC and the introduction in 2009 of LCLS. The initial development of SLAC required some novel thinking and a significant leap in the physics of the day in order to make the accelerator a reality. This included the construction of a freeway bridge over the accelerator for the future I280! A view of SLAC from the air with a bridge waiting for a freeway to be built! Since its 2009 launch, LCLS has drawn researchers in a wide array of scientific fields from around the globe to explore the innermost workings and properties of common and exotic materials…

Have you thought how IET Connect can help you?

While I was at the IET Global Volunteer Conference (more of that to follow), I saw a booth advertising IET Connect .  I thought IET Connect services were not applicable overseas and was very happy to be informed that bar legal advice, the services that they provide are available to IET members in Northern California. This is a summary of their services . They may be able to help with health and wellbeing, education support, debt advice to name but a few of their services. If you have questions or are unsure if they can help you, drop them an email at contactus@ietconnect.org.

JLB 2016: From Concept To Screen

When Charles Francis Jenkins projected a film of a dancing girl on to his wall in Richmond, Indiana on June the 6 th 1894 the audience looked for the trickery behind the scene, yet today we’re more awed by adding another remote to the growing collection on the coffee table - how else are you to access all of the content available through your television just over 100 years later? The sold out Multimedia Communications Network 2016 John Logie Baird Lecture: From Concept to Screen was held at Savoy Place, London and brought together SMPTE President, Barbara Lange and Nagra Kudelski’s SVP of Marketing, Ivan Verbesselt, who discussed the past and future of television whilst celebrating SMPTE’s Centenary year and presenting John Logie Baird’s Grandson, Iain Logie Baird, with the framed document…

Appeal For More Female Engineers To Have Their Work Published

On National Women in Engineering Day 2016, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is calling for more female engineers to capitalise on their knowledge and expertise by having their work published in its world-renowned publications and information services. The IET publishes a range of widely respected publications and information services for engineers and technicians, and is making the appeal due to the worryingly low number of female engineers contributing to its publications. For example, only 1% of the 800 editorial board members serving across the IET’s journal portfolio are female. Read more...
